• Twerking
a type of dance that came out of the bounce
music scene of New Orleans in the late 1980s. In the 90s,
twerking had widespread appeal in black party culture
throughout the hip-hop/rap region known as The Dirty
South, including New Orleans, Memphis, Virginia Beach,
Miami and Houston
• Zouk
Zouka a style of music and dance derived
from Ato-Caribbean French creole culture of the lesser
Antiles, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and St.
Lucia. Zouk had its initial beginnings in the French
department of Guadeloupe and Martinique, It was
pioneered and popularized by the band Kassav’ in the
early 1980
• Capoeira
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art
that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music.
It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the
beginning of the 16th century
• Jitterbug
exuberant ballroom dance popular in the
1930s and ‘40s, originating in the United States and
spread internationally by U.S. armed forces during
World War II. Its original freewheeling acrobatic
swings and its were modified for more conservative
ballroom versions
• The Twist
But the simple dance that we now know as
the Twist originates in the late fifties among teenagers,
and was popularized by Chubby Checker in his
preparation to debut the song to a national audience on
August 6, 1960, on The Dick Clark Show, Saturday
night program that, unlike disc jockey Clark's daytime
American.
• Jazz Dance
developed from both 19th and 20th century
stage dance and traditional Black social dances and
their white ballroom offshoots. On the stage, minstrel
show performers in the 19th century developed tap
dancing from a combination of Irish jigging, English
clog dancing, and African rhythmic stamping.
• Hip hop
a dance began during the late 1960's and
early 1970's, originally inspired by the movements of
African dancing, and flourished as a new style of dance
performed on the street for the people. Hip-hop
incorporates aspects of modem dance, tap, and swing,
integrating music and complex movements to form
artistry.
• The Lindy Hop
The Lindy Hop (or Lindy) is a partner dance
that originated in 1920's and 30's Harlem, New York. The
Lindy Hop has enjoyed a revival since the mid 1980's, when
Swing Legend Fankie "musclehead" Manning, an
influential choreographer and performer of the era, was
rediscovered
• The Charleston
the Charleston is a dance named after the
harbor city of Charleston, South Carolina. The rhythm was
popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States
by a 1923 tune called "The Charleston’’
• Tap Dance
Tap dance is a type of dance characterized by
using the sounds of metal taps affixed to the heel and toe of
shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion, coupled
with both characteristic and interpretative body movements
• Griotic Dance
African culture, the Griot (GREEoh) or djialy (jali) is the village historian
who teaches everyone about their past and keeper of cultural traditions and history of the
people, Swazi dancers. Telling a story through dance. These traditions and stories are kept
in the form of music and dance, containing elements of history or metaphorical statements
that carry and pass on the culture of the people through the generations Griotic dance not
only represent historical documents, but they are ritual dramas and dances
