Yes/no questions
Yes/no questions are questions that have a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.
1. Is Sami late?
Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.
2. Does Sami play football?
Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.
Examples
Ali is late. (S+V)
Is Ali late? (V+ S)
Rana can swim.
Can Rana swim?
They have arrived.
Have they arrived?
Examples
I am late. (S+ V)
Are you late? (V+S)
I was born in 1998.
Were you born in 1998?
I have finished the report.
Have you finished the report? (have / has / had + PP)
Main verbs: do /does /did
They play football. Present: Do + S + infinitive….?
Do they play football?
He plays football. Present: Does + S + infinitive….?

Wh-questions
Wh-questions are questions that start
with a question word
(e.g. who, what, where, when, why, how, etc.)
and ask for specific information.
The meaning and usage of question words
o Who: used to identify a person. E.g. Who is she?
o What: used to identify a thing. E.g. What is it?
o Which: used to tell two (or more) things apart. E.g. Which leg hurts?
o Where: used to identify a place. E.g. Where is Vancouver?
o When: used to identify a time. E.g. When is your birthday?
o Why: used to identify a reason. E.g. Why is she crying?
o Whose: used to identify possession. E.g. Whose car is that?

o How: used to explain a way/method. E.g. How did you make the cake?
o How long: used to explain length or duration. E.g. How long is your hair?
How long was your holiday?
o How far: used to identify distance. E.g. How far is your house from the
station?
o How much/many: used to identify quantity. E.g. How much money do you
have?
o How often: used to explain frequency. E.g. How often do you brush your
teeth?
Examples:
He lives in London. Wh-word + does + S + infinitive….?
Where does he live?
He arrived at 9:00 a.m. Wh-word + did + S + infinitive….?
When did he arrive?
I go to school by bus. Wh-word + do + S + infinitive….?

wh-questions are made in two different ways
depending on whether the question is about the
subject or the object of the sentence:

For questions about the object, use the question word and the
same word order as a yes/no question.
E.g.
He likes pizza.

Asking about the subject
For questions about the subject, use the question word and the
same word order as a statement.
E.g.
1. Sami is a teacher.
Who is a teacher?
2. The storm destroyed the house.
What destroyed the house?
