The Giver is a Newbery-award- winning novel and is often considered one of the first
dystopian novels for young adults. Despite this acclaim, it is also frequently
placed on banned-book lists because of some of the subjects that it tackles. The
story revolves around Jonas, who finds that his perfect community isn’t as perfect
as he thought once he is assigned a job he never imagined having.

Summary
Eleven-year-old Jonas lives in a colorless world. After participating in the
twelve-year-old ceremony, he receives the profession - Keeper of Memory.
The boy begins to learn the exercises. His teacher, the Sender, gives him
memories of pain, hunger, war, hunger, love, happiness... The new Keeper
must keep them to himself and not share them with anyone. Suddenly the
Sender has an idea to change something. Jonas leaves Kitur with baby Gabriel
at night. The boys face hunger, cold, and fatigue without traveling. Until
suddenly the twelve-year-old climbed a hill and saw the lights, the light
streaming through the windows, the flickering colors among the trees, and the
memories that protect families, surrounded by love.
