What is Basketball?
What is Basketball?

Is a team sport played by two teams of five


players on a rectangular court. The objective
is to shoot the ball.
1891 the game invented by Dr. James Naismith. Who
would be the first basketball coach of the Kansas
Jayhawks, one of the most successful programs in the
game’s history.
 1861-1939 James Naismith was a Canadian-American
physical educator, physician, chaplain, sports coach
and innovator.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball.
The first balls made specifically for basketball were
brown, and it was only in the late 1950s.
The first baskets were wooden peach baskets hung on
the wall.
The game was originally played with nine men on each
team.
1898, the first professional league was formed.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS
• THE BALL
 Circumference – between 75 and 78 cm.
(29.5 and 30.25 inches)
 Weight – 600 and 650 grams. (20 and 22 oz.)
 Air Pressure – around 8 lbs.
• BASKETBALL COURT
 For the International games is 28 by 15 meters
(Approx. 92 by 49 ft)
 The National Basketball Association is 94 by 50
feet (29 by 15m)
 Most court are made up of wood.
• BACKBOARD
• BAC
 A backboard is a piece of basketball equipment.
It is a raised vertical board with a basket attached.
It is made of a flat, rigid piece of material, often
plexi glass. It is usually rectangular as used in NBA,
NCAA and international basketball.
• Size of a basketball backboard

 Width: 6 feet (72 inches)


 Height: 3.5 feet (42 inches)
• BASKET NET
 The net shall be made by a white chord shall be:
 Suspended from the ring.
 Manufactured so they check the ball momentarily
as it pass through the basket.
 Manufactured with 12 loops to attach it to the
ring.
• OFFICIALS
- an official is a person who has the responsibility to
enforce the rules and maintain the order of the
game.
A. REFEREE
1. Crew Chief – the lead official usually performs the jump
ball.
2. Umpires – same responsibilities with the lead official
only that they are only assistants.

B. SCORER
 The one who will record the points, violations and fouls
gained by each team.
 Uses score sheets for documentary purposes and
scoreboard for letting the teams know about their status
in the game.
C. TIMEKEEPERS
 Responsible for monitoring the time of the
game.

1. Passing
- good passing is necessary to maintain positions
of the ball and the quickest way to move the ball
to an affective offense in accuracy in passing.
Types of Passing:
• Chest Pass
• Bounce Pass
• Overhead Pass
2. Dribbling
-Is a movement of the ball, caused by a player in
control, who throws or taps the ball to the floor.
• Is the skill of controlling the ball as you bounce it
to the floor.
Types of Dribbling:
High and Low bounce
Crossover
Between the legs
Behind the back
3. Shooting
-The primary purpose of the game is to score goals.
The effectiveness of a player is to be able to shoot a
variety of shots from varying distances.
Types of Shooting:
• Shooting
• Slam dunk
• Two-points shot
• Three-points shot
4. BLOCKING
- It occurs when the offensive player shoots and
the defender swats the ball away. Blocking its
trajectory to the basket and preventing any points
from being scored.
5. REBOUNDING
- is a vital component of the game as it allows the
team that has missed a shot to have another
opportunity to score. The possession of the ball
changes after a successful shot or rebound.
Types of rebound:
• Defensive rebound
• Offensive rebound
