ANOREXIA NERVOSA
• A person eats very little and fears
weight gain.
• Body becomes thin because it uses
up energy stored as fat.
• Energy stored as protein may also
be used up.
• Extreme weight loss, which later can result in death.
• Occurs mainly in teenage girls
• Treatment: Counselling, to give them the best chance of
making full recovery
Mental health symptoms
• Worry on body shape, weight
and/or appearance
• Intense fear of gaining weight
• Negative or distorted body image,
perceiving self to be fat when at a
healthy weight or underweight
• Low self-esteem (e.g. guilt, self-criticism,
worthlessness)
• Mood swings
• Anxiety or depression
• Heightened anxiety around mealtimes

• Body mass index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the
square of height in meters.
• An inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—
underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
• Calculation: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
• Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)
Calculation: 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98
BAD EFFECTS OF OBESITY
• can lead to increased risk of type 2 diabetes
• main cause of heart disease
• affect bone health
• affect reproduction
• it increases the risk of certain cancers.
