EVERYONE
What world problem today seem
to be beyond solution?
CLIMATE CHANGE
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, the students must
be able to:
1. Explain the nature and causes of climate
change
2. Enumerates the effects of climate
change
3. Identify ways to mitigate and adapt to
climate change
WHAT IS CLIMATE
CHANGE?
Climate change is a variation in the
pattern of climate properties such as
temperature, wind, and precipitation
over a long period of time.
CAUSES OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
Concentration of carbon and other
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
leads to global warming, as well as
human activities contributes to
climate change.
GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

The GHGs emitted from human activities as

follows:
• Carbon Dioxide – from forest activities
• Methane – from agriculture activities
• Nitrous Oxide – animal waste handling
• Chloroflourocarbons – individual processes
• Ozone
GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

• Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere help

regulate the surface temperature of the
planet.
• Greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun to
keep the earth warm
• Increasing levels of GHGs in the atmosphere
make for a warmer world leading to abrupt
changes in climate.
GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

• IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

1. Extreme weather conditions
2. Degraded air quality due to increased GHGs
3. Altered forests productivity and species
composition
4. Unproductive agriculture
5. Deteriorated water resources
6. Disrupted natural ecosystems
7. Submerged coastal areas
8. Weakened human health

GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE

HOW TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE?

• Climate Change Mitigation- refers to measures that

can reduce atmospheric accumulations of GHGs and
thereby delay the predicted impact of GHGs on
global climate.

• Climate Change Adaptations – refers to adjustments

in ecological, social, or economic systems in
response to actual or expected climate change
stimuli, effects or impacts to reduce vulnerability,
moderate damages, and realize opportunities.
HOW TO ADDRESS
CLIMATE CHANGE?
1. MITIGATION
Climate Change Mitigation -refers to
measures that can reduce
atmospheric accumulations of GHGs
and thereby delay the predicted
impact of GHGs on global climate.
MITIGATING CLIMATE
CHANGE
Energy:
 Reduce heavy dependence on imported fossil
fuels by promoting the use and development of
renewable energy derive form the sun(solar),
wind, water (hydro), geothermal, and waste
(biomass)
 Promote the use of alternative fuels as ethanol
and biodiesel in the transportation sector
 Sustain and develop efficient mass public
transportation
MITIGATION
Waste:
 Promote proper waste disposal and efficient waste
management system such as composting and sanitary
landfills
 Impose proper treatment of solid, and gas wastes
generated by the industrial sector
MITIGATION
Agriculture and land use change and forestry
2. ADAPTATION
Climate Change Adaptations – refers
to adjustments in ecological, social,
or economic systems in response to
actual or expected climate change
stimuli, effects or impacts to reduce
vulnerability, moderate damages, and
realize opportunities
CONCLUSION
Climate change, the largest environmental
change in this century is likely to intensify hydro-
meteorological hazards and lead to large-scale
population movements/ eco-migration.
Climate change is a human–induced
phenomenon. Much of the issues are intricately
linked to social and human dimensions and the
solution to these problems therefore lies in the
social and human dynamics/ action.
No single set of approach can provide
solution to the ill effects of climate
change. A mix of technical, behavioral
and policy approaches is needed in
minimizing the effects
An Integrated Approach is Needed at :
National and regional levels -
Role of National Meteorological and Hydrological
Services
Cooperation across disciplines and agencies
Links with academic community.
International level -
Between IGOs and NGOs concerned
Capacity building and transfer of technology
activities.
