Unit 18 – Computer Systems Hardware
LO3: Be able to build and
upgrade computers
Unit 18- Computer Systems Hardware
Unit 18 – Computer Systems Hardware
Grade Criteria
Upon completion of these tasks you will meet the
following grading criteria:
Pass Merit Distinction
P4: Install different hardware M2: Recommend preventive
components on an identified maintenance activities for the
computer system identified computer system
P5: Implement preventative
maintenance requirements for
the identified computer system
Unit 18 – Computer Systems Hardware
Scenario
Cyber Berkeley is an organisation that supports the training and development
of Cyberists between the ages of 14 and 19 in the Gloucestershire area. As
part of an operation to facilitate a move to a new facility, you have been asked
to assist in completing a variety of tasks in order to make the move successful
• P4: Install hardware, demonstrate the assembly and configuration of a
computer system including screen shots and detailed description of what is
being done
• P5: Implement preventative maintenance requirements
• M2: Recommend preventative maintenance activities for Cyber Berkeley
Unit 18 – Computer Systems Hardware
Tasks
Report or Presentation: P4, P5
You are to build your proposed computer system whilst adhering to all health
and safety considerations, as part of the implementation you must document
all of the components that are to be installed. This can be through video or
photographic evidence. Evidence must also include the configuration of the
computer system as well as implementing preventative maintenance
procedures. A list of all procedures can be found in the teaching content
Maintenance Plan Document: M2
Create a maintenance plan for the computer system that you have created.
The maintenance plan should relate to the proposed solution from P3. The
evidence will be the actual maintenance plan, which should consider issues as
listed in the teaching content

OCR Response
I am pleased to provide you with a response from the Chief Moderator for Cambridge
Technical in IT, as follows:
P4: Any witness statement that is provided must be individual to the learner and provide
the context in which they are working (so therefore must be detailed). A tick list or
statement to say that they have carried something out is not sufficient e.g. ‘I confirm that
they installed the components’ would not be sufficient. Photographs and videos are good
forms of evidence. Also remember, that the learners cannot work in small groups for this
unit, they must work as individuals
P5: Yes this can be part of P4 as the learners could implement the preventative
maintenance ideas at the same time
M2: The maintenance plan should be relevant to the scenario they are working to and not
necessarily all of the teaching content if they are not relevant
