FIRE WATCH TRAINING

COMMITMENT TO LEAD

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE WATCH RESPONSIBILITIES

 Stop work if conditions become hazardous

 Monitor flammable and combustible materials
 Know area, know hazards, know how to call for help
 Notify operations supervisor if work stopped
 Put out fire if possible
 Make sure fire blanket not contaminated with flammable material
 Stop work if leaving area unless another fire watch available
 Ensure all hot work is tented or protected by fire blanket so that
sparks can’t trave

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE WATCH RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor flammable and combustibles:

 spark containment and for any abnormal event.

 Being familiar with the area and potential hazards and
knowing how to obtain assistance in an emergency.
 Stop the hot work if a fire (or unsafe situation) is
observed, inform operations supervisor and initiate
appropriate.
 Monitors the hot work area for changing conditions and
watches for fires, and extinguishes them if possible.
SAFETY ZONE
FIRE WATCH RESPONSIBILITIES

 Ensure that the area is covered with fire blanket and all
openings in nearby area to control sparks and slags. f.
 Whenever fire watch leave the activity area, the job shall
be stopped or endorse to another qualified fire watch. g.
 Fire watch shall stay at hot work location at least 30 min.
after completion of the work and/or Where there is any
possibility fires, maintaining area during lunch, all breaks,
and for at least one-half hour after completion of the hot
work activity.

SAFETY ZONE
HAZARDOUS ZONE

High Risk Areas–Areas containing hazardous Areas as

defined by area classification and areas where
potential ignition sources must be controlled. Lower
Risk Areas–Areas not classified as High Risk but
where potential ignition sources must still be
controlled. Exempt Areas–Areas where Hot work
activities are permitted without a Hot Work Permit

SAFETY ZONE
HAZARDOUS ZONE

Explosive gas/air mixture is continually present or present

for long periods and dusts deposited in thick layer can cause
explosion in the presence of ignition source.

SAFETY ZONE
HAZARDOUS ZONE

Explosive gas/air mixture or dust cloud is likely to occur in

normal operation

Zone Zero

0
SAFETY ZONE
HAZARDOUS ZONE

Explosive gas/air mixture or dust cloud is not likely to occur

in normal operation, and if it does will only exist for a short
period
Zone 1

1
SAFETY ZONE
HOT WORK

Before any Hot Work takes place, a hazard assessment is to

be performed in order to identify the hazards and
precautions required

Zone 2

2
SAFETY ZONE
PREPARATION FOR HOT WORK

 Exact nature of the hot work job

 Isolations required
 Free from flammable materials and properties of
materials
 Hazardous area classification
 Need for continuous or periodic atmospheric testing
 Purging and cleaning required
 Protection of relief streams, vents, sample points

SAFETY ZONE
PREPARATION FOR HOT WORK

 Restrictions on other work in the vicinity

 Covering and protection of drains or gullies
 Need for blankets / screens / tents
 Need for ventilation or fume extraction
 Provision of fire fighting equipment
 Positioning of ignition sources
 Use of Fire Watch and / or member of the ERT

SAFETY ZONE
HOT WORK -CLOSURE

Before Hot Work Permit closure, the Receiver must ensure

that:

 The Hot Work Permit Issuer has been informed that the requirement for
the Hot Work Permit has ended.
 All persons associated with the hot work activity at the work site have
withdrawn.
 All tools and equipment have been removed.
 Housekeeping has been performed.
 The area has been monitored by the Fire Watch for the period defined in
the permit to ensure the area is safe.

SAFETY ZONE
WHAT IS FIRE?

Fire is a chain chemical reaction between fuel,

oxygen, and heat that requires three elements.

1. Fuel
2. Oxygen
3. Heat

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Fire extinguishers remove one or more of the

components:

 Could be removed O2

 Could be removed heating

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

All required fire protection, detection, and

extinguishing equipment must be available, in
service, and fully operable. Examples of equipment
that needs to be considered include:

 Portable fire extinguishers

 Fire hoses
 Fire hydrants
 Deluge system

SAFETY ZONE
THE CLASSIFICATIONS OF FIRE

THERE ARE FOUR CLASSIFICATIONS OF FIRE:

 Class - A - Wood, Paper, Cloth, Rubber, some Plastics.

 Class - B - Gasoline, Kerosene, Paint, Propane.
 Class - C - Electrical Equipment.
 Class - D - Metals Like Magnesium, Titanium,

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE EXTINGUISHER PARTS:

 SAFETY PIN
 NOZZLE
 PRESSURE GAUGE
 HANDLE
 TUBE
 HIGH PRESSURE GAS CANISTER
 DRY CHEMICAL,CARBON DIOXIDE OR WATE

SAFETY ZONE
FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION
VISUALLY INSPECTED:

 ENSURE THERE IS NOTHING OBSTRUCTING ACCESS TO

EXTINGUISHER
 MAKE SURE EXTINGUISHER IN A HIGHLY VISIBLE PLACE THAT CAN
BE EASILY SEEN DURING AN EMERGENCY
 CHECK TAMPER SEAL TO MAKE SURE ITS NOT BROKEN OR MISSING
 PULL PIN NOT MISSING
 MAKE SURE PRESSURE GAUGE IS IN OPERATING RANGE
 TRACK LAST MAINTENANCE CHECK
 LOOK FOR OBVIOUS PHYSICAL DAMAGE
SAFETY ZONE
SAFE USE METHOD OF DCP TYPE FIRE
EXTINGUISHER
FIREFIGHTING CONCEPT (P.A.S.S)

P – PULL THE PIN

A – AIM THE NOZZLE AT THE BASE OF THE FIRE
S – SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER
S – SWEEP THE NOZZLE OR HOSE SIDE TO SIDE
