LIGHTING AND VENTILATION
• The classrooms, studios and other spaces depend on north lights for their lighting. The lighting is good during day time.
• Ventilation is from small windows are large and near the ceilings.
• Semi-circular, vaulted skylights are also provided.
• Applications of stack effect combined with cross ventilation have been incorporated – using vertical slits on one side and exhaust openings on the other.
• The above mentioned applications are well taken care due to the hyperbolic form of the roof.
MATERIALS USED
• Brick has been used as primary buildings materials for the entire complex walls, columns.
• Brick arches have been used for wide spans.
• Use of concrete has been restricted to foundations, floors slabs, facade and ties for arched openings
STUDENT ENVIRONMENT
A set of two independent blocks adjacent to the main
college building are held together by a vast
landscaped open deck space.
The “cube” is a space situated at the rear block of the
students center: a former storage shed turned into an
informal studio space for students in 2010, by the
students of the institute themselves. It is another one
of the independent blocks, along with the “common
room” developed as a 24-hour working space for
students as and when required by them, for working
on NASA trophies and thesis.
Emotional value: there is a sense of belongingness, an associational
factor which is mutual among the students whenever cube is
mentioned since they have spent more time working religiously
together as a team for something or the other than anywhere else in
the college.
The students associate themselves with this particular place because
of lots of memories and experiences they have gathered over a period
of time in this intimate space.
DRAWBACKS
• There has been no thought of linking studios and the relationship between
different classes is quite poor.
• Architect has failed to link the courtyard in an active manner with rest of the
building. As a result, it is a passive & a dead space
• Corridors and courtyards are poorly linked.
• Some faculty rooms are very close to studios while, others are far away. Thus, a
varying nature of relationship has been generated between students and faculty.
• The uneven spacing of faculty rooms create very awkward relationship between
students and faculty.
• Interaction and exchange of is which forms a very important part of architectural
education has been ignored by the architect.

OTHER INFORMATION
• There are two doubly loaded corridors originating on two ends of the building
which lead from the entrance to the studios and classrooms.
• The facilities like library, museum, common room, darkroom, and administration
and faculty rooms are on both sides of this corridor.
• This corridors are poorly connected to the courtyard through four small openings,
at each corners.
• The design studios are on the northern side of the building. Entrance hall is a long
rectangle in shape. The courtyard has not been well linked with rest of the
building.
• The front block has facilities for recreation, lounging, and spaces for indoor
games, besides having a canteen, and toilets. It is partially sunken, allowing for
decks and mezzanine levels.
FUN FACTS
• Corbu Day: The annual founders day, is celebrated on October 6th;
the birthdate of Le Corbusier, via guest lectures given by well-known
architects, along with the giving of awards and scholarships to
meritorious students.
• Part of UNESCO World Heritage: In 2016, the architectural works of Le
Corbusier in Chandigarh, including the College of Architecture, were
inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, further highlighting their
significance in the global architectural landscape.
