DURABILITY OF GFRP
REBARS
WHAT IS FRP ?
• Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) is a composite material that consists of a
polymer matrix reinforced with fibers.
• The fibers can be made from a variety of materials, such as glass, carbon,
aramid or basalt, and they provide the strength and stiffness to the composite
material.
• FRPs are known for their high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance
and durability, and are used in a variety of applications, such as automotive,
aerospace, construction and marine industries.
Major properties of FRP composites include:
Very light
High Tensile Strength
Corrosion and water resistant
Electrical Conductivity resistance
Chemical Compound resistance
High UV resistance
Advantages v/s Disadvantages
of FRP
Advantages Disadvantages
FRP (lightweight and high strength) Low elastic modulus of FRP
FRP has good corrosion resistance FRP has poor long-term temperature
resistance
Good thermal performance of FRP Aging phenomenon of FRP
FRP has good electrical properties Low interlayer shear strength of
FRP
Types of FRP
• Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP)
• Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP)
• Aramid Fibre Reinforced Polymer (AFRP)
What is GFRP?
• GFRP is created by embedding high-strength glass fibers within a polymer
resin, resulting in a material that boasts remarkable strength and durability.
• The glass fibers in GFRP can be made from various types of glass, including
E-glass, S-glass, and others, each with distinct properties suitable for specific
applications.
• The polymer resin matrix can consist of thermosetting or thermoplastic
resins, which provide different characteristics like enhanced strength,
flexibility, and chemical resistance.
Advantages of GFRP
Design
Lightweight flexibility
Corrosion- Low
Resistant Maintenance
Fire - Resistant Cost-effective
Disadvantages of GFRP
Brittleness
Difficult to repair
Limited Temperature Range
Environmental Impact
GFRP REBARS
• The full form of GFRP Bar is Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer which is a
composite material of longitudinal glass fibers, polyester resins & matrix
material.
• Nowadays, It’s become the best alternative reinforcing material in RCC
Structure due to its Properties and elastic behaviour that is very similar to
Conventional steel rebars.
• GFRP Bars also give enough time to alert before failure which is again similar
to steel. The most advantageous feature of GFRP Bars is their corrosion
resistance.
Properties of GFRP Bars
Density 1600 to 2000 Kg/m3
Tensile Strength 400 to 4200 MPa
Fiber Content % by Weight 50 to 80%
Young’s Modulus 35 to 86 GPa
Elongation 1.2 to 5%
Coefficient of Linear Expansion 6.0 to 10 (10^-6/degree celsius)
Application of GFRP Bars
The construction application of GFRP Bars is listed below.
•Aerospace and Defense
•Automotive Industry
•Power Generation
•Dock & Marines applications (Seawall, Dock, Harbour)
•Cooling Towers
•Mining and tunneling
•Highway Applications
•Transport Infrastructure (Bus station, Runway, Highway Pavements)
•High-rise building construction

Problem statement
• The durability of GFRP Bars is very low due to which it is not used in
adverse climatic conditions. We would look into the issue and create a
solution to increase the durability of the bars.
SOLUTION
• Create a Double Sand coating layer to increase the durability
• Using different quality of resin
