Understanding Molecular Structure Basics

This document provides an overview of molecular structure by discussing atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds. It begins with an introduction and agenda. Atoms are defined as the basic building block of chemistry and the smallest unit of matter. Elements are substances that cannot be broken down further and are composed of atoms with the same number of protons. Molecules are groups of bonded atoms that represent the smallest fundamental unit that can take part in a chemical reaction. Compounds consist of two or more elements in a fixed ratio and have new properties compared to the individual elements. The document concludes by asking questions.

INTRODUCTI
ON
Good morning guys!
so today we will be talking about the molecular structure and what it is
made out of and types of it. I hope that you will enjoy our presentation and
maybe you will learn new things.
ATOMS
An atom is the basic building block of chemistry. It is the smallest unit into
which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged
particle. It also is the smallest unit of matter that has the characteristic
properties of a chemical element. And did you know that all atoms are
roughly the same size, whether they have 3 or 90 electrons. Approximately
50 million atoms of a solid matter lined up in a row would measure 1 cm
(0.4 inches). A convenient unit of length for measuring atomic size is the
angstrom,. And who discovered the atom was a chemist named John Dalton
in 1808.
ELEMENTS
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. An element is composed of
atoms that have the same atomic number, that is, each atom has the same number of protons in its nucleus as all other atoms of that
element. Also The chemical element was first presented by the English scientist Robert Boyle. He defined an element as a
substance “incapable of decomposition” and like a true scientist added the prophetic by any means with which we are now
acquainted. Boyle’s definition comes admirably close to present-day theory. Elements have been changed in the laboratories of
today, though not by any chemical means. Also an American chemist named F.W.Clarke stated in 1873: “It is probable that the
chemical elements were originally developed by a process of evolution from much simpler forms of matter as is indicated by the
progressive chemical complexity observed in passing from the nebulae through the hot stars to the cold planets.
MOLECULES
a group of atom bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
there are three different types of molecules, Atoms, Element, and Compounds. The ratio of the numbers of atoms that can be
bonded together to form molecules is fixed; for example, every water molecule contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of
oxygen. It is this feature that distinguishes chemical compound from solutions and other mechanical mixtures. Thus hydrogen
and oxygen may be present in any arbitrary proportions in mechanical mixtures but when sparked will combine only in definite
proportions to form the chemical compound-water (H2O). And did you know who discovered Molecules, August Kekulé in
1858.
COMPOUNDS
Compounds can be defined as substances consisting of 2 or more different types of elements in
a fixed ratio of their atoms. When the elements combine, some individual property of the
elements is lost and the newly formed compound has new properties. Compounds are
represented by their chemical formula. A chemical formula is a symbolic representation of the
properties of atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound. There are two types of
compounds, molecular compounds and ionic. In molecular compounds, the atom binds each
other through covalent bonds. In ionic, it is held together with ionic bonds. These are the two
types of bonds out of which every compound is made of. And some examples of a compound is
(H2O) which is water and (H2O2) which is hydrogen peroxide also known as an alternative for
bleach.
