Discrete Probability Distribution Guide

This document discusses discrete probability distributions and provides examples to illustrate key concepts: 1. It introduces discrete probability distributions and their properties such as all probabilities summing to 1. 2. An example calculates the probabilities of getting different numbers of boys from a sample of students. 3. Further examples demonstrate computing probabilities for given random variables and assessing understanding through multiple choice questions.

PROBABILITY
DISTRIBUTION
OBJECTIVES
1. Illustrates a probability distribution for a discrete
random variable and its properties.
2. Computes probabilities corresponding to a given
random variable.
3. Value the importance of the concepts learned in
discrete probability distribution and apply it in real-life
situation.
THINK-PAIR-SHARE
A small remedial class contains 8 boys
and 5 girls. If three students were selected
at random one after the other, determine
the values of random variable B
representing the number of boys.
THINK-PAIR-SHARE
Guide Questions:
1. What are the outcomes (sample space) of the given
problem?
2. Complete the table below.
3. What are the values of the random variable B?
4. How many 3 boys occur in the given event?
5. How many 2 boys occur in the given event?

PROPERTIES OF DISCRETE
PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION
1. The probability of each value of the
random variable must be between or equal
to 0 and 1. In symbol 0 < P(X) < 1.
2. The sum of all the probabilities of all
values of the random variable must be equal
to 1. In symbol, we write it as 𝚺P(X) = 1.
TO COMPUTE FOR THE PROBABILITY OF
CORRESPONDING GIVEN RANDOM
VARIABLES:
1. List the sample space in the given experiment.
2. Construct a table showing the number of each
outcome
3. Illustrate a probability distribution.
4. Get the sum of the probabilities of all values of
the random variable.
