Reliability Engineering - Course - Introduction

Reliability engineering is the application of science to maximize the reliability of systems through design, testing, and management. It involves statistical analysis to predict reliability and identify potential failures. The goal is to understand when, where, and why failures may occur to ensure systems perform as required without failure for a specified period of time under certain conditions.

Overview of Reliability Engineering

What is reliability

Ability to perform the required

functions under a stated
condition for a defined time
period
Reliability Engineering B / RMS D

Basics in Reliability

 What is reliability
 Reliability is defined as the probability that an item will
perform a required function without failure under
stated conditions for a stated period of time."
 A functional definition of failure is needed. For example, a
failure means different things to the user and to the repair
person.
 The system's operating conditions must be specified (e.g.
car or home environment).
 A period of time is needed.

Basics in Reliability
 What is reliability
 Reliability can also be quantified in other ways
 Mean time to failure (MTTF)
 Mean time between failure (MTBF)
 Failure rate
 Rate of occurrence of failures (ROCOF) for
repairable items
 Successful probability for one-time items
 Others
• Structure reliability: strength of steel X, load Y,
R=P(X>Y)
• Availability: The probability of a repairable system
available, A=MTBF/(MTBF+MTTR)
• Number of faults in software system

Basics in Reliability

 What is reliability
 Reliability is highly related to safety
 Safety is freedom from accidents or losses
 Safety is an abstract concept
 Safety may be defined as

Safety     hazard P hazard 

hazard

where  hazard  is a measure of the effects that may

be caused by a particular hazard and Phazard  is the
probability that the hazard will occur.
