IFT
Interferential therapy
Naveenkumar.R(MPT Sports)
Introduction
• IFT is the transcutaneous application of two alternating medium frequency currents
• Medium frequency currents are the currents whose frequency falls between the range
from 1000 to 10,000 Hz
• The principles of interferential therapy where first introduced by Ho nemec
• Interferential current are also known as nemec’s current
Principle
• The interferential therapy depends upon the principles of interferential effect , the point
where the the two medium frequency currents crossing over forms beat frequency .
• Thus, beat frequency reflects the therapeutic frequency—that is, the frequency that elicits
the therapeutic effect.
• Example: the two medium frequency current , current in circuit A=4000Hz and circuit
B=3900Hz at the point where the currents cross over new frequency of current forms(beat
frequency) is 100Hz
Impedence
• Impedance is a type of resistance produced by the tissues against any electrical
stimulation
• Impedance is denoted by ‘Z’ where
SKIN IMPEDANCE is calculated as Z = ½ π f C
f= frequency of current
C=capacitance
Z=Impedence of the tissues
Type of frequency
• Sweep frequency is the frequency which cam be directly fed to the beat frequency by
the machine
• Sweep : it is possible to change the frequency, continuously in a prefixed pattern and
time .
Methods of electrode placement
• Bipolar method
• Quadripolar method
Indications
• Cervical spondylosis
• OA knee
• Ankylosing spondylosis
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Frozen shoulder
• Muscle injuries
• Ligament injuries
• Low back pain
EVIDENCE
TITLE : A Comparative Study on Effect of IFT and Conventional Exercises Versus
ICT And Conventional Exercises in Cervical Spondylosis
AUTHOR :Minal Dhairya Bhavsar
CONCLUSION : IFT along with conventional exercises is more effective than ICT &
Conventional exercises
TITLE : Comparative Effect of Burst Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve
Stimulation (Tens) Versus Interferential Therapy (Ift) Along With Exercise In
Reducing Pain and Functional Impairtment in Subjects with Knee Osteoarthritis
AUTHOR :Mahima Mukharjee , Ronald Prabhakar
CONCLUSION: After comparison it showed that Interferential therapy along
with exercise was statistically more effective for pain relief stiffness and
physical function than Burst
transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with Exercise
TITLE: Effects of Ultrasound therapy , Interferential therapy and combination of
ultra sound therapy with interferential therapy on anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)
injury (sprain) of knee In sports
AUTHOR : Veera Kumar Reddy, Dr. M V Srinivasan
CONCLUSION :It was concluded that combination of ultrasound therapy with
interferential therapy was significantly better when compared with the two other
treatments, namely, ultrasound therapy and interferential therapy in improving
range of motion of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of knee.

Pain
AUTHOR : Savvina Theologou ,vgenia Trevlaki ,Emmanouil Trevlakis
CONCLUSION:The results of this review demonstrated that IFC showed a positive
effect on reducing pain and improving the functioning of patients with CLBP.
