5-UT Codes

This document discusses standards, codes, specifications and procedures for non-destructive testing (NDT). It explains that standards are necessary to ensure the same defects are evaluated consistently regardless of when, where or who conducts the test. It provides definitions for codes, standards, specifications and procedures. It then discusses the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) boiler and pressure vessel code, its constitution covering various sections, and its rules concerning ultrasonic testing.

Why standards are necessary?
• NDT is a quality tool to ensure reliability of equipment
and structural component
• To make it really significant - same defect must be
estimated as the same no matter when, where or who
conducts the test
• Necessary to improve skill of personnel, test method
and evaluation of test result
• Standards specify minimum requirements

systematic collection of regulations and rules of procedure or conduct
- AHD)
• Standard is a level of excellence or quality of product and service (A
degree or level of requirement, excellence, or attainment - AHD)
• Specification is a detail description of the criteria for the constituent,
construction appearance, etc. of a material and service (A detailed,
exact statement of particulars, especially a statement prescribing
materials, dimensions, and quality of work for something to be built,
installed, or manufactured - AHD)

Definitions (continued)
• Procedure is a written document make on step by step
basis which show you HOW to it (A series of steps taken to

of established forms or methods for conducting..)
• Written procedures are prime important in quality
assurance
• Clear & concise written instructions minimize
misinterpretation
