Why standards are necessary?
• NDT is a quality tool to ensure reliability of equipment
and structural component
• To make it really significant - same defect must be
estimated as the same no matter when, where or who
conducts the test
• Necessary to improve skill of personnel, test method
and evaluation of test result
• Standards specify minimum requirements

Definitions
• Code is a conventionalised set of rules of good practice (A
systematic collection of regulations and rules of procedure or conduct
- AHD)
• Standard is a level of excellence or quality of product and service (A
degree or level of requirement, excellence, or attainment - AHD)
• Specification is a detail description of the criteria for the constituent,
construction appearance, etc. of a material and service (A detailed,
exact statement of particulars, especially a statement prescribing
materials, dimensions, and quality of work for something to be built,
installed, or manufactured - AHD)
