Climate Change Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate climate change risks from heavy reliance on fossil fuels, we need to transition to cleaner energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower. This requires increased investment in renewable technologies as well as improving energy efficiency. Carbon pricing and public education are also crucial to incentivize emission reductions and drive individual action towards clean energy solutions. LED lighting technology offers a suitable solution that can help reduce fossil fuel dependence through its energy efficiency and long lifespan.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS

FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

MITIGATION

In class presentation
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel which leads
to climate change risk
- Since fossil fuels have greatly contributed to economic progress, they also have a substantial
responsibility for the potential of climate change.

- The use of coal, oil, and natural gas as sources of energy and for industrial purposes has resulted in a
substantial rise in the release of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere.

- This buildup functions as an insulating layer, capturing thermal energy and resulting in the increase of
the Earth's temperature, often referred to as global warming.
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel which leads
to climate change risk
The risks associated with climate change are numerous and far-reaching, impacting every aspect of life on Earth:

• Rising sea levels: Melting glaciers and ice sheets contribute to rising sea levels, threatening coastal communities and
ecosystems.

• Extreme weather events: Climate change intensifies weather patterns, leading to more frequent and severe
heatwaves, droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires.

• Food security: Shifting weather patterns and disruptions in ecosystems can impact agricultural production, leading to food
scarcity and malnutrition.

• Biodiversity loss: Rising temperatures and changing environments push many species towards extinction, disrupting
ecosystems and impacting vital ecological services.

• Public health concerns: Air pollution from fossil fuel burning contributes to respiratory problems, cardiovascular
diseases, and other health issues.
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel which leads
to climate change risk
To mitigate these risks, we need to significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards cleaner energy
sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower. This transition requires concerted efforts on multiple fronts:

• Investing in renewable energy: Governments and corporations must increase investments in

research, development, and deployment of renewable energy technologies.

• Improving energy efficiency: Promoting energy-efficient technologies and practices can significantly reduce overall
energy demand.

• Carbon pricing: Implementing carbon pricing mechanisms incentivizes polluters to reduce emissions and encourages
alternative energy investments.

• Public awareness and education: Raising public awareness about the risks of climate change and the benefits of clean
energy is crucial for driving individual and collective action.
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel on SDG 7

SDG 7:

• Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all, is a noble and ambitious
goal.

• However, our heavy reliance on fossil fuels throws a long shadow over its achievement.

• While fossil fuels have played a crucial role in driving economic development and providing energy
access for millions, their dark side - climate change risks - poses a significant threat to the very
progress SDG 7 aims for.
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel on SDG 7

Fossil Fuels: A Double-Edged Sword for SDG 7

• On the one hand:

• Fossil fuels are abundant, readily available, and have established infrastructure, making them a reliable
and affordable energy source for many, especially in developing countries.
• They have been instrumental in lifting millions out of poverty and driving economic growth.

• On the other hand:

• Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide, which trap heat and contribute
to global warming.
• This warming leads to a cascade of negative consequences, impacting food security, water resources,
ecosystems, and human health, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.
Heavy reliance on fossil fuel on SDG 7

Climate change casts a long shadow over SDG 7 progress in several ways:

• Exacerbating energy poverty: Extreme weather events and natural disasters caused by climate change can
damage energy infrastructure, disrupt energy supply, and increase energy costs, pushing people back into
energy poverty.

• Threatening energy security: Climate change can impact water availability, hydropower generation, and
agricultural production of biofuels, jeopardizing energy security and access for millions.

• Hindering sustainable development: The negative impacts of climate change on various sectors like
agriculture, health, and ecosystems can impede overall sustainable development, making it harder to
achieve SDG 7 and other SDGs.
Responsibility of the Balancing needs of Heavy
reliance on fossil fuel on SDG 7
Transitioning away from fossil fuels towards clean and renewable energy sources is crucial to achieving SDG 7 and
mitigating climate change. This requires a multi-pronged approach:

• Investing in renewable energy: Solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy sources offer sustainable and
environmentally friendly alternatives. Increased investment in research, development, and deployment of these
technologies is essential.

• Improving energy efficiency: Reducing energy consumption through efficiency measures can significantly decrease
reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to SDG 7.

• Promoting just and equitable transition: The shift away from fossil fuels must be managed carefully to ensure a just and
equitable transition for communities and workers dependent on the fossil fuel industry.

• Fostering international cooperation: Global collaboration and knowledge sharing are vital for accelerating the transition
to clean energy and ensuring SDG 7 for all.

LED light manufacturing process
Stage 1: The Seeds of Light - Chip Fabrication

• Epitaxial Growth: The process begins with growing thin layers of semiconductor materials, like
gallium nitride and aluminum gallium nitride, on a sapphire wafer. This intricate process, called
epitaxial growth, forms the foundation of the LED chip.
LED light manufacturing process
Doping: Precisely adding impurities, like magnesium and silicon, to the semiconductor layers creates "p-
type" and "n-type" regions within the chip. This doping process allows for the controlled flow of
electricity, crucial for light emission.
LED light manufacturing process
Patterning and Etching: Using photolithography and etching techniques, the desired structures and
electrical contacts are defined on the wafer. This creates tiny LED chips, each containing a p-n junction
where light will be generated.
LED light manufacturing process
Stage 2: Packaging the Power - Chip Encapsulation

- Mounting: Each tiny LED chip is carefully mounted onto a metal or ceramic lead frame, providing
mechanical support and electrical connections.
LED light manufacturing process
Bonding: Fine wires connect the chip's p- and n-regions to the lead frame, enabling the flow of electricity
to the chip.
LED light manufacturing process
Encapsulation: A protective lens made of epoxy resin or silicone is applied, shielding the chip and wires
from moisture, dust, and external damage. This layer also plays a role in focusing and directing the
emitted light.
LED light manufacturing process
Stage 3: Building the Brilliance - Light Fixture Assembly

• Driver Circuit: An electronic driver circuit is mounted on the base of the light fixture. This circuit
regulates the current and voltage supplied to the LEDs, ensuring efficient and stable operation.
LED light manufacturing process
Heat Management: Proper heat dissipation is crucial for LED performance and longevity. Heat sinks, fins,
or fans are often incorporated into the design to draw away heat generated by the LEDs.
LED light manufacturing process
Final Assembly: The LED modules are integrated with reflectors, diffusers, and other components to
create the desired light distribution and aesthetics of the final light fixture.

Stage 4: Quality Control and Testing
• Each LED light undergoes rigorous
testing to ensure it meets safety,
performance, and color temperature
specifications. This ensures consistent
quality and delivers the expected
brightness and efficiency to consumers.
