Research Title
Academic procrastination among
nursing students in Pokhara nursing
campus
Background of the study
• Procrastination is well studied phenomenon and it is indicated that over 70% of students
report delay in learning and academic tasks on regular basis in the higher level education
and college setting as per Australian psychologist (Steel and Klingsieck, 2016).
• According to Stockholm University, Sweden, Procrastination is a pervasive self-
regulatory failure affecting approximately half of the student population (Rozental and
Carlbring, 2014).
• A study published in International Journal of Educational psychology, Turkey it is
estimated that over 75% of students procrastinate particularly towards meeting study
obligations (Duru and Balkis, 2017).

• A study done in student of jorhat, India showed that academic procrastination is often
seen among college students at each academic level which includes underestimating the
time needed to complete an academic task, excuses for poor performance in a task,
missing deadlines to important tasks like submission of assignments, projects, preparation
for exams etc. (Gohain et al.,2021)
• Therefore, it is important to determine the factors contributing to academic
procrastination and to develop intervention to prevent academic procrastination thereby
improving student's quality of learning and negative psychological state.
Rational
• According to study done in Malaysia nursing students face an extraordinarily different
experience in overwhelming course loads, clinical courses, standardized testing, and
balancing personal, social, and scholarly demands. (Kasim, 2017).
• A cross sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of academic
procrastination among students at medicine faculty mulawarman university, Indonesia.
There were 216 students of 2018, 2019, and 2020 academic year at medicine faculty
selected as the respondents. The most common procrastination found in writing a term
paper, studying for an exam and keeping up with weekly reading assignments which
accounted for 77.8%, 89.3% and 84.2% respectively. (Daryani et al.,2021)

• For these reasons, examining academic procrastination at the college level can be
mandatory. In our context, students at all levels mostly suffer from increasing
procrastination. This is a chronic problem in our educational scenario and will continue.
Therefore, identifying the reasons and causes will help the individual to overcome such
behavior and face the reality.
• A limited study has been conducted in Nepal regarding academic procrastination and
reason of academic procrastination. Therefore, the researcher felt the need to assess the
level of academic procrastination among nursing students in selected nursing college of
pokhara. Findings of this research may help for planning further research regarding
academic procrastination among students.

Operational definition
Academic Procrastination: In this research study, academic procrastination is the condition when
nursing students postpone completion of activities, project, and assignment unnecessarily which is
measured by using standard self administered questionnaire; procrastination assessment scale
(PASS) tool.
Area of procrastination: In this study, area of procrastination refers to different academic area like
writing an assignment, studying for exam, keeping up weekly reading assignment, academic
administrative task, attendance task, college activities in general.
Reason of Procrastination: It refers to the cause of academic procrastination among nursing
students.
• High procrastinators > Mean + Standard deviation
• Low procrastinators < Mean – Standard deviation (gohain & gogoi,2021)
Delimitation
• This study will be delimited to Pokhara Nursing Campus, Ramghat-12, Pokhara.
Methodology
Design of the study
• Descriptive cross-sectional research design
Population and setting
• The target population of the study will be undergraduate nursing students of BNS (first
and second year) and BSN (first, second and third year).
• The research will be conducted in T.U.,IOM, Pokhara Nursing Campus.
Sampling Technique
• Total enumeration method will be adopted for this study
Sample size
The number of students in pokhara nursing campus are;
• Bns 1st year = 36 Bns 2nd year = 37
• Bsn 1st year = 40 Bsn 2 nd year =39 Bsn 3 rd year = 16
Total number of student = 168.
Inclusion Criteria
Nursing students who will be available and willing to participate in the study will be
included.
Research instrumentation
Tools for data collection
Instrument that will be used for data collection will be divided into 2 parts: They
are:
• Part I: Include questions related to socio demographic characteristics.
• Part II: Include questions related to areas and reasons of academic procrastination.
Part –I
Socio demographic Characteristics
• The socio-demographic proforma was developed by the researcher which consists of 9
items related to age, academic year, course of study, marital status, area of permanent
residence, currently residing place, family income, reason for choosing nursing, history of
physical and psychological illness.
Part-II
Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS)
• The PASS tool was created by Solomon and Rothblum in 1984. It includes 44 items in 2 parts.
The first part consists of 18 items measuring the areas of procrastination in 6 academic
domains: 1) writing a term paper, 2) studying for an exam, 3) keeping up with weekly reading
assignments, 4) performing administrative tasks, 5) attending meetings and 6) performing
academic tasks in general. Each of these 6 domains contains 3 items rated on a 5-point Likert
scale.
• The first item measures the frequency of procrastination on academic tasks, the second item
measures the extent to which procrastination on the task was causing a problem for students,
and the third item measures the extent of students willingness to decrease their procrastination.
Contd…
• Their degree of procrastination on the task and degree to which it causes a problem were summed
to provide an overall measure of academic procrastination, with total scores ranging from 12 to 60.
Scoring :
High procrastinators = Those who scored a 36 or above on the scale
Low procrastinators = Those who scored a 35 or below 15 (yeh et al.,2017)
• The second part of the PASS contains 26 items, each rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1
indicative of "not at all reflects why I procrastinated" to 5 indicatives of "definitely reflects why I
procrastinated".
• In this study following modifications will be made in PASS for the feasibility of the
participants:
In place of term paper, assignment will be written.
Academic Administrative Tasks: Filling out forms, getting id cards or admit cards,
submitting documents for performing administrative tasks will be written for Academic
Administrative Tasks.
In place of resented, didn't like will be written .
• Validity: The PASS tool created by Solomon and Rothblum in 1984 has been used in
numerous research studies conducted around the world (Custer, 2018 ;Hayat et al.,2019;
kaur et al.,2022). This tool has excellent psychometric properties (α = .997) (gohain et
al.,2021)
• Validity of the research tool will be established by performing review of literature, peer
discussion, seeking opinions of the research advisors and subject experts. The constructed
tool will be given to experts and advisors. They will be requested to judge the items in
terms of agreeableness or disagreeableness related to relevance, clarity, accuracy,
appropriateness and usefulness of the present study. As per the suggestions and
recommendation of the expert changes will be made.
• Pretest: Pretesting of the instruments will be conducted in 10% of total sample
size (n = 17) among BSN first year students of pokhara university. Response and
feedback will be taken and consulted with the advisor if any modification of the
questionnaire will be needed.
Data collection procedure
• Formal approval from Pokhara Nursing campus will be taken. Data will be
collected within two weeks from 2080/8/2 to 2080/8/12. Data collection procedure
will be initiated after the approval of proposal from research department of
Pokhara Nursing Campus.
• The researcher will self- introduce herself and explain the purpose of the study to
the respondents. The questions will be distributed to students and collected after
30 minutes.
Cont…..
• The researcher will collect data by Self administered questionnaire. Informed
consent will be taken from respondents. The participation on the study will be on
voluntarily basis .
• Confidentiality will be maintained by not disclosing the information with others
and will be used only for research purpose.
