Solar Panels: Types, Design & Benefits

This seminar presentation summarizes information about solar panels. It discusses that solar energy can be used to generate electricity through thermal or photovoltaic means. Photovoltaic solar energy uses sunlight to emit electrons from semiconductor surfaces to produce electricity. A solar panel collects sunlight and converts it to electrical energy through solar cells, which can be connected in series or parallel depending on voltage and current needs. The presentation reviews different types of solar panels and their efficiencies, and discusses advantages like reducing energy bills and being environmentally friendly, while disadvantages include high upfront costs and location sensitivity.

• Advantages and Disadvantages
Solar Energy
• The sun provides us energy in the form of heat
and light and these can be used in producing
electricity .
• Thermal Solar Energy : using solar energy for
heating fluids and rotating turbine to generate
electricity .
• Photovoltaic Solar Energy : using light rays to
emitted electrons from the surface of
semiconductor and produce electricity.
• Solar energy is renewable , helps in saving
money on electricity bills .
Photovoltaic Effect

• It comes from the word “photon” which means light and “ volt ”
means measure of electricity .
• Photovoltaic Electricity is obtained by using photovoltaic system .
• A basic photovoltaic system consists of four components : Solar
panel , battery , regulator and the load .
Solar Panel
• Solar panel is responsible to collect solar
radiations and transform it into electrical
energy .
• Solar panel is an array of several solar
cells {photovoltaic cells} ,the arrays can
be form by connecting them in parallel
series connection depending upon the
energy required.
Types of Solar Panel
• Mono-Si panel: most efficient (21%),
by single Si crystal, perform best at
std temperature, require least area.
• Poly-Si panel: less efficient(16%), by
fusing different crystal of Si, perform
best at high temperature, require large
area.
• Thin film panel: least efficient(12%),
by depositing more layers of PV
material, require large area, requires
more sunlight.
Solar Cell

• A structure that converts solar energy

directly to DC electricity.
• It supply voltage and current to the
load
Power = current * voltage
Series and Parallel connection
• Series Connection: The positive terminal of first panel
is connected to negative terminal of next and so on.
The resulting voltage is sum of all panel voltage.
Total current will be equal to output current of
single panel.
• Parallel Connection: All the positive terminals of
different panel are connected together and negative
terminals of different panel are separately connected
together.
The total voltage output remains the same of single
panel.
The output current becomes the sum of current of
each panel.
Designing
• A solar panel can be designed by
many ways but the most modern
way is to use AutoCAD designing
app.
• It has descripted tools which is easy
to use by everyone.
• It comes with the extra features like
tree shadow, range of other
buildings, which helps us in
calculating the average efficiency of
a solar panel.
Designing
• Solar cells are connected to each
other with the help of busbar and
the panel is given the support of
back sheet and junction box below
which protects it from being
damaged while using.
• We place tempered glass above the
panel and aluminium frame on top
which reduces the effect of dust,
temperature, shadow, tilt angle for
better efficiency.
Advantages and Disadvantages
• Advantages:
Environmental friendly
energy, reduces energy
bills, 20 years
guarantee, innovative
technology, infinite
energy.
• Disadvantages:
Seasonal energy, high
upfront cost,
installation
requirement, location
sensitivity.
