LANGUAGE ISSUES OF
MIGRANTS
It seems obvious but sharing a common language is a vital step towards social cohesion
amongst our communities and the building of a shared culture. Yet in the UK we are failing to
teach English adequately to the migrants who live and work amongst us. That is one of the
conclusions made in a recent report by the influential think tank Demos, entitled.
The research raised serious concerns about the policies for delivering English language learning
to non-English speaking citizens, which it states suffers from “fragmentation, a lack of clarity
and a short-termist approach”. More than 90% of the 599 participants in this nation-wide cross-
sectional study face relevant language barriers at least once a year, 30.0% even once a week.
Using family members and friends for translations is reported as the
most frequent resort for overcoming the language barrier (60.1%
report it for more than 50% of encounters), followed by “using
gestures” (32.0%) or just accepting...
PREVENTIONS
language barrier prevents migrants from entering the job
market, building relationships, and taking steps towards
financial and social stability. This highlights the importance of
providing linguistic support to refugees, both during the
asylum application process, and as they integrate into a new
environment.
HOW TO TACKLE
• Open Cultural Center supports migrants and refugees in Spain and
Greece by offering free language classes, with the aim to support
refugees’ integration and improve their chances of accessing training
and employment opportunities. In Barcelona, there are online classes
in Arabic, English, Catalan, and Spanish at the Language Lab. OCC
Greece offers Greek and English classes to hundreds of adults and
children living in Nea Kavala refugee camp. These classes allow
students to improve their linguistic skills, and they also provide them
with a sense of community and a chance to make new friends.
