Brazilian Carnival
The Rio Carnival is the most
famous event of the Brazilian
Carnivals. It is the unmissable
event that has sensational
parades, music, dancers,
impressive costumes and
parties everywhere. The
grand Samba Parade is the
main highlight, when the
twelve most talented Samba
Schools compete for the title
of Parade Champion.
Each one chooses a theme
and creates an eighty-minute
show. It all starts from scratch
with the infectious music, the
choreography and the
dazzling costumes.
CARNIVAL DATE
The Brazilian Carnival varies in dates,
since it depends on the liturgical
calendar and can be celebrated in
1 February or March. It generally begins
on the Friday before Ash Wednesday and
lasts for several days, culminating on
Shrove Tuesday. The exact date changes
each year, as it is based on Holy Week
and the Lent period.
WHERE IS IT CELEBRATED?
The Rio de Janeiro Carnival is celebrated
in the Sambódromo, Marques de
Sapucaí, which was designed by
architect Oscar Niemeyer. Samba
schools, which are organized according
to their history, perform in Samba
parades.
Traditions
Carnival is a secular celebration that
welcomes religious deprivation. It is a
tradition that finds its first origin in ancient
Rome, where this festival had the objective
of welcoming spring.
These Roman traditions survived and became
famous in Renaissance European culture. They
were part of the celebrations that took place in
some ballroom dances, where clothing, masks
or costumes were used and where people from
all social classes could often be confused.
These forms of celebration came to America
through the conquest.
