Introduction:
3-Phase Induction Motors are the most
widely used type of electric motor in the
world. They are also used in conventional
electric locomotives.
Three-phase induction motors are rugged,
reliable, and relatively inexpensive. They
are also relatively easy to maintain.
The working principle of 3-phase induction
motor is electromagnetic induction. Squirrel Cage 3-Phase Induction Motor
Auxiliary System of Electric Locomotive
In the auxiliary system of electric locomotive the 3-phase
induction motor is used for providing cooling in main drives,
traction motors, power transformer, silicon rectifiers circuitry
and in entire locomotive.
Three phase induction motor are also used in main air
compressors, oil circulating pumps and air blowers etc.
There are some abbreviation used in loco for aux. machines-
a) MVMT
b) MVRH
c) MPH
d) MCP1, MCP2, MCP3
e) MVRF etc.

POH of 3-Phase Induction Motor
POH stands for Periodic Over Hauling.
It is a maintenance and testing procedures for the 3-phase induction
motors used as auxiliaries in conventional electric locomotives (such
as traction motor blowers, cooling fans, compressors, etc.) can vary
depending on the locomotive manufacturer and model.
During the POH of the 3-phase induction motors used as auxiliaries
in electric locomotives, the following steps are typically performed:
a) Inspection.
b) Cleaning.
c) Lubrication.
d) Replacement of worn-out parts or damaged parts.
e) Electrical Connection.
OVER HAULED LOCOMOTIVE
Inspection:
This includes checking the motor casing, rotor, stator,
bearings, and other components for any abnormalities.
Cleaning:
The motor is cleaned to remove dirt, dust, and debris
that may have accumulated during operation.
Lubrication:
The motor's bearings and other moving parts are
lubricated as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Replacement of worn-out parts:
Any worn-out or damaged parts such as bearings,
brushes, seals, or capacitors are replaced with new ones.
Electrical Connection:
The motor's electrical connections, including
terminals and wiring, are inspected and tightened if necessary.
Testing of 3 Phase Induction Motor during its POH
Various tests are performed on 3-phase induction motor during its
periodic over hauling (POH) as a part of regular maintenance to
ensure its proper functioning.
The following tests are as follows-
Insulation Resistance Test.
Hi-Pot (High-Potential) Test.
No-Load Test.
Full Load Test.
Vibration Analysis Test.
Insulation Resistance Test: The insulation resistance of a 3-
phase induction motor should be at least 1 megohm. If any of the
readings are less than 1 megohm, the motor insulation is
damaged and the motor should be repaired or replaced.
Hi-Pot (High Potential) Test: It is often used to test the
insulation of 3-phase induction motor. An AC voltage for
Hi-Pot test ranging from 125%–150% of the rated RMS
line-to-line voltage.
No-Load Test: This test gives information regarding no-
load losses such as core loss, friction loss, and windage
loss. In this test there is no mechanical load is applied on
the shaft of motor.
Full Load Test or Blocked Rotor Test: In this test a
variable voltage is applied to the motor where the rotor is
mechanically blocked and the voltage keep increasing
until the motor starts drawing full load current.
Vibration Analysis Test: A vibration analysis test is
performed on a 3-phase induction motor to measure the
amount of vibration produced by the motor.
