Gender
A social construct that encompasses roles,
behaviors, and expectations associated with
being male or female
Gender Representation
Promoting gender representation in the workplace is not only a matter of social
justice, but it also has proven benefits for companies, including increased
innovation, better decision-making, and improved financial performance. It
requires a holistic and ongoing commitment from leadership, employees, and
stakeholders.

Gender representation in the workplace is a critical aspect of achieving equality

and inclusivity. It refers to the balance and fair treatment of individuals of all
gender identities in the work environment.
Gender Pay Gap
Gender Pay Gap
The gender pay gap persists globally, with women earning, on average, less
than men for similar work. Factors like occupational segregation, unpaid
caregiving, and bias contribute. Addressing this issue requires policy reforms,
workplace initiatives, and cultural shifts to achieve true economic equality.
The Gap
One of the most pressing gender issues in the Philippines is the persistent
gender wage gap. Women in the Philippines earn only 78% of what men earn,
indicating a significant pay disparity that needs to be addressed. This disparity
is even more pronounced in rural areas where women earn just 43% of men's
earnings. The gender wage gap is a clear indicator of the unequal value
society places on the labor of women compared to men. Addressing the
gender wage gap will require policy changes and collective action by
businesses, governments, and civil society organizations to ensure that
women are paid fairly for their work.

Efforts to Close the Gap:
• Implementing policies like paid parental leave, flexible work arrangements,
and mentorship programs can help support women's career
advancement.
• Conducting regular pay equity audits to identify and rectify disparities in
compensation.
• Promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives to address bias and create a
more inclusive work environment.
Long-Term Benefits:
• Closing the gender pay gap can lead to greater economic stability for
families, increased consumer spending, and enhanced productivity for
businesses.

Continued Advocacy and Education:

Public awareness, education, and advocacy efforts play a crucial role in
addressing and ultimately eliminating the gender pay gap.
Occupational Segregation
Occupational segregation refers to the pattern where different genders are
concentrated in different types of jobs or industries. This phenomenon is a
significant contributor to the gender pay gap

• Stereotypes and Bias

• Impact on Earnings
Efforts to Combat Occupational
Segregation:
• Encouraging girls and young women to pursue education and training in
non-traditional fields.
• Promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives in workplaces.
• Implementing policies that support work-life balance, making it easier for
individuals to pursue careers in a wider range of fields.

Benefits of Diverse Workforces: A more balanced gender representation in

all occupations can lead to more innovative and productive workplaces, as
well as a more inclusive and equitable society.
Efforts to combat occupational segregation are
essential for achieving true gender equality in the
workplace. This includes challenging stereotypes,
providing equal educational and training
opportunities, and implementing policies that promote
diversity and inclusion in all fields and industries.
Glass Ceiling and Sticky Floor
are metaphors used to describe barriers and challenges faced by individuals,
particularly women, in advancing their careers.
Glass Ceiling
Definition: The glass ceiling is an invisible but pervasive barrier that prevents
women and other marginalized groups from reaching the highest levels of
leadership and decision-making in organizations.

Characteristics:
It's often not overt discrimination, but rather subtle biases, stereotypes, and
institutional structures that limit advancement.
It can manifest as a lack of representation in executive and senior leadership roles.
It's a systemic issue that affects women across various industries and sectors.
Sticky Floor
The sticky floor refers to the phenomenon where individuals, primarily
women, find themselves "stuck" in low-wage, low-skilled jobs with limited
opportunities for advancement.

Characteristics:
It's characterized by a lack of upward mobility within the organization.
Women may find it difficult to break out of entry-level positions, despite their skills
and qualifications.
This can be due to various factors, including limited access to training and
development opportunities, as well as bias in hiring and promotion processes.
Microaggressions and Bias
Microaggressions and bias are forms of subtle, often unintentional
discrimination or prejudice that can have a significant impact on
individuals, particularly those from marginalized or underrepresented
groups.
Microaggressions
Microaggressions are everyday slights, insults, or offensive behaviors that
communicate derogatory or negative messages to individuals based on
their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other aspects of their identity.

Examples:
• Gender microaggressions: Sexist comments or behaviors that undermine or
belittle individuals based on their gender.
• LGBTQ+ microaggressions: Remarks or actions that demean or marginalize
individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Bias
Bias refers to preconceived opinions or attitudes, often based on
stereotypes, that influence our judgments, decisions, and behaviors
towards individuals or groups.

Types:
Implicit Bias: Unconscious or subconscious biases that affect our actions and
decisions without our awareness.
Explicit Bias: Conscious and deliberate prejudices that individuals may hold and
express openly.
Impact:
• Microaggressions and bias can lead to feelings of marginalization,
exclusion, and reduced self-esteem for the recipients.
• They can create a hostile or unwelcoming environment for those targeted,
hindering their ability to thrive in academic, professional, or social settings.
Workplace Harassment
and Discrimination
Workplace Harassment
involves any unwelcome behavior, conduct, comments, or
actions that create a hostile, intimidating, or offensive work
environment for an individual or group of employees. It can
be based on factors like race, gender, religion, sexual
orientation, or other protected characteristics.

Types of Harassment: This can include verbal, physical, or

visual conduct that creates a hostile or offensive work
environment.
Gender harassment in the workplace involves unwelcome
behavior or conduct based on an individual's gender, which
creates a hostile, intimidating, or offensive work environment.
It can occur in various forms and impact both men and women
Gender dynamics in the workplace remain a critical issue.
Women often face barriers like the gender pay gap, limited
representation in leadership, and biases. Inclusive policies,
equal opportunities, and cultural shifts are vital for
fostering a balanced and equitable work environment that
benefits everyone.
Gender significantly influences the workplace in several ways:

• Pay Disparities: Women often earn less than men for similar work,
contributing to the gender pay gap.
• Unconscious Bias: Subtle biases can influence hiring, promotions,
and performance evaluations, affecting career progression.
• Stereotypes and Expectations: Preconceived notions about gender
roles can shape job expectations and opportunities.
• Visibility and Recognition: Women's contributions may be
overlooked or undervalued, impacting career advancement.
• Sexual Harassment and Discrimination: Women may face
workplace harassment and discrimination based on their gender.
