What is a National Artist?
Based on the definition provided by NCCA, a
Nati onal Artist is a Filipino citizen who has been given
the rank and title of Nati onal Artist in recognition of
his or her significant contributions to the
development of Philippine arts and letters.
It recognizes excellence in the fields of Music,
Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film
and Broadcast Arts, and Architecture or Allied
Arts.
The rank and title of National Artist is conferred
by means of a Presidential Proclamation.
What is the Order of National Artists?
Those who have been proclaimed National Artists are given
a Grand Collar symbolizing their status. Recipients of this
Grand Collar make up the Order of National Artists.
It is jointly administered by NCCA and CCP. NCCA
stands for National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
It is then
conferred by the President of the Philippines.
When was the Order of
National Artists Created?
It was established by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No.
1001, s. 1972, which created the award and Decoration of
National Artist, “to give appropriate recognition and
prestige to Filipinos who have distinguished themselves
and made outstanding contributions to Philippine arts and
letters,”
Order of the National Artist
Aims to recognize:
[Link] Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of
the country.
[Link] Filipino artistic accomplishment at its highest level and to promote creative
expression as significant to the development of a national cultural identity.
[Link] Filipino artists who have dedicated their lives to their works to forge new paths and
directions for future generations of Filipino artists.
The following are the seven categories under which National Artists can be
recognized:
1. Literature – poetry, fiction, essay, playwriting, journalism and/or literary
criticism;
2. Film and Broadcasting / Broadcast Arts – direction, writing, production
design, cinematography, editing, camera work, and/or performance; and
3. Architecture, Design and Allied Arts– architecture design, interior design,
industrial arts design, landscape architecture and fashion design.
4. Music - singing, composition, direction, and/or performance;
5. Dance - choreography, direction and/or performance;
6. Theater – direction, performance and/or production design;
7. Visual Arts – painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation
art, mixed media works, illustration, graphic arts, performance art and/or
imaging;
Qualifications for the National Artist Award
The qualifications for a Filipino to be nominated and selected are
rigorous. Below are the qualifications for the National Artist Award.
1. Living artists who are natural-born Filipino citizens.
2. The content and form of their work have procured in building a
Filipino sense of nationhood.
3. An artist who have developed a mode of creative expression or
style and living a legend on succeeding generations of artists.
4. An artist who manifest excellence in the practice of their art form
5. The artwork made has attained an international and national
recognition.
The Insignia of the Order of National Artists
The insignia is made up of a Grand Collar featuring
circular links portraying the arts, and an eight-pointed
conventionalized sunburst suspended from sampaguita
wreath in green and white enamel.
The central badge is a medallion divided into three equal
portions: blue, white, and red which symbolizes the
Philippine flag, with three stylized letter Ks- that stand for
CCP’s motto: “katotohanan, kabutihan, at kagandahan”
(“the true, the good, and the beautiful”), which was coined
by then first lady, Mrs. Imelda Marcos, the CCP’s founder.

Honors and Privileges

the Philippines;
2. The insignia of a National Artist and a citation;
3.A lifetime emolument and material and physical benefits comparable in value
to those received by the highest officers of the land such as:
a.a cash award of One Hundred Thousand Pesos (P100,000.00) net of taxes, for
living awardees;
b. a cash award of Seventy-Five Thousand Pesos (P75,000.00) net of taxes, for
posthumous awardees, payable to legal heir/s;
c. a monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits;
d. life insurance coverage for Awardees who are still insurable;
e. a state funeral and burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani;
