Understanding Environmental Pollution

Pollution is the contamination of the environment that interferes with human health and ecosystems. There are several types of pollution including air, water, soil, and noise pollution. Air pollution harms human health through breathing problems and cancer, and also damages plants, animals, and ecosystems. Water pollution kills fish, birds, and other wildlife and makes water bodies unpleasant for recreation. Soil pollution builds up toxic chemicals and pathogens that harm plant and animal life. Noise pollution exposes humans and animals to annoying, stressful, or damaging sound levels. The major sources of pollution include automobiles, industry, agriculture, and other human activities. Effects of pollution are widespread and include global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, diseases, and environmental

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

POLLUTION

Pollution, contamination of Earth’s environment

with materials that interfere with human health,
the quality of life, or the natural functioning of
ecosystems (living organisms and their physical
surroundings). Although some environmental
pollution is a result of natural causes such as
volcanic eruptions, most is caused by human
activities.
TYPES OF POLLUTION

 AIR POLLUTION
 WATER POLLUTION
 SOIL POLLUTION
 NOISE POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION
Air Pollution, addition
of harmful
substances to the
atmosphere. One of
many forms of
pollution, air
pollution occurs
inside homes,
schools, and offices;
in cities; across
continents; and even
globally. It causes
breathing problems
and promotes cancer
—and it harms
plants, animals, and
the ecosystem.
WATER POLLUTION
 Water is necessary to live
on earth. All organisms
contain it; some live in it;
some drink it. If severe,
water pollution can kill
large numbers of fish,
birds, and other animals,
in some cases killing all
members of a species in
an affected area. Pollution
makes streams, lakes,
and coastal waters
unpleasant to look at, to
smell, and to swim in.
SOIL POLLUTION
 Soil pollution is a buildup of toxic
chemical compounds, salts,
pathogens (disease-causing
organisms), or radioactive materials
that can affect plant and animal life.
NOISE POLLUTION
 Pollution, exposure of
people or animals to
levels of sound that
are annoying,
stressful, or damaging
to the ears. Although
loud and frightening
sounds are part of
nature, only in recent
centuries has much of
the world become
urban, industrial, and
chronically noisy.
SOURCES OF POLLUTION
1. AUTOMOBILES
2. PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
3. NUCLEAR EXPLOSION
4. SMOKE
5. LOUD SPEAKERS
6. WASTAGE OF FACTORIES
7. INDUSTRIAL WASTE
EFFECTS OF POLLUTION

b) GLOBAL WARMING
c) DESTRUCTION OF OZONE LAYER
d) DISEASES like skin cancer
e) RISE IN TEMPERATURE
f) ACID RAIN
g) SMOG
SOLUTIONS

I. TREE PLANTATION
II. SMOKE FREE INDUSTRIES
III. PROPER USE OF GARBAGE WASTES
IV. MORE USE OF RENEWABLE
SOURCES POLLUTION
V. FREE VEHICLES
VI. SEWAGE DISPOSAL
VII. CONTROL RISE IN POPULATION
