LESSON 4
COMPUTING
ARITHMETIC
MEANS
BY: APRIL JOY MAGALONA-PALBACAL
At the end of the lesson, the
students should be able to
1. define arithmetic means,
2. determine arithmetic
means of a sequence
What’s In
In the sequence: 10, 15, 20, 25,…;
what term has a value of 385?
What’s New
For example:
In the sequence: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24;
what is its arithmetic means.
The arithmetic mean is a term between the first
term and the last term.
Thus, 8, 12, 16, and 20 are the arithmetic means of
the sequence.
What is it
The first and last terms of a finite arithmetic
sequences are called arithmetic extremes, and the
terms in between are called arithmetic means.
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24
the terms 4 and 24 are the arithmetic extremes
8, 12, 16, and 20 are the arithmetic means
What is it
The arithmetic mean between two
numbers is sometimes called the
average of two
numbers.
Example 1:
What is the arithmetic mean between 10 and 24?
answer: 17
What is it
Using the example above, solve for the arithmetic mean
of each of the pairs of arithmetic extremes. Write your
answer on your answer sheet.
1. 86, _____,
65.5 45
2. 135, _____,
152.5 170
3. 50, _____,
10 - 30
4. 125, _____,
92.5 60
5. 43, _____,
66 89
What is it
The formula for d can be used to find the arithmetic
means if more than
one arithmetic means will be inserted between two
arithmetic extremes.
Example 2:
Insert three arithmetic means between 8 and 16.
answer: 10,12,14
What is it
Find the missing terms of the following sequence.
Write answer on your answer sheet.
21
1. 15, _____, 27
_____, 33
_____, 39
_____, 45
2. _____,
1 7, 13, _____,
19 _____
25
3. _____,
-3 4, _____,
11 18, _____
25
4. _____,
0 18
9, _____, 27
_____, 36
5. 16, _____,
20 _____,
24 _____,
28 32
What’s More
Write answer on your answer sheet.
A. What is the arithmetic mean between the two
given arithmetic extremes?
1. 5 and 19
2. 3𝑥2 + 8 and 𝑥2 – 6
3. -2 and 58
4. 2x + 3y and x – 5y
5. 13.8 and 15.6
What’s More
.Insert the specified number of arithmetic means
between the two given arithmetic extremes.
1. Three arithmetic means between 2 and 22.
2. Four arithmetic means between 8 and 23.
3. Two arithmetic means between 41 and 95.
4. Two arithmetic means between -5 and 1.
5. Two arithmetic means between
97 and 172.
