Course content:
Part1 - Origin of petroleum: Theories of petroleum Origin-
Inorganic theories, organic theories, failures of the
inorganic theory , Organic theory hypotheses, conclusions
of geologists, migration of petroleum, types of sedimentary
reservoirs.
Part2 - Chemical and physical properties: chemical
structures- petroleum definition, types of petroleum
components as groups and compounds, homogeneous
and heterogeneous hydrocarbon groups, mineral salts &
organic metallic, physical and physico-chemical properties
– (32) tests of crude and its derivatives as fuel , asphalts
and lubricants according to astm standard.
Part3 - Classifications & evaluations of petroleum & its
products: Classifications of petroleum & its products -
chemical classifications - physical classification and
geographical classification - OPEC basket. evaluation of
crude oil quality and the conclusions of evaluation.
Part4 - Operations of Refining: Methods of
manufacturing high value products, nature of
operations - physical & chemical, auxiliary processes
refining plants, pretreatment processes- desalting and
Hydrotreating processes, distillations processes -
atmospheric distillation, vacuum distillation, true
boiling point curve.

Part5 - Petrochemical processes and petrochemicals:
catalytic reforming, specifications of marketing gasoline,
fluid catalytic cracking process, alkylation process,
isomerization process, coking process. Polymerization
process.
Part6 - Lubrication Oil Production: Types of lubrication
oils, Undesirable Characteristics, Processes changeable
undesirable characteristics - deasphalting, Solvent
extraction, dewaxing, finishing process, block diagram
of hydro-processes of base oils, typical specifications of
finished lube base oils.
Part7 - Blending processes & technologies: Types of
blending products in refineries, components of gasoline
blend, additives to gasoline blending, additives to diesel
Blending, performance additives, blending of base oils,
equations of bending, types of blending technology,
layout of needed information for blending.
OBJECTIVES OF COURSE:
1. Knowledge of the theories of petroleum and
its migration and sedimentary reservoirs
containing it.
2. Understanding the chemical structures and
the physical and physico-chemical properties.
3. Gain the skills of testing, classification and
evaluation of petroleum and its products
according to international standards.
4. Acquiring the skills of application processes
pre-treating and refining of petroleum and its
derivatives.
5. Knowledge of the petrochemical processes
of petroleum derivatives and methods of
improvement and cracking.
6. Acquire mixing and optimization skills
according to the requirements of the global
scale.
Learning Outcomes:
upon completion of the program the students
able to :
1. apply knowledge of petroleum refining and
petrochemical engineering.
2. design and conduct experiments as well as
to analyze and interpret data.
3. design a system, component, or process to
meet desired needs within realistic
constraints such as economic,
environmental, social, political, ethical,
health and safety, manufacturability and
sustainability.
4. function with multi-disciplinary team.
5. use the techniques, skills and modern
engineering tools.
