Smart Brooder Presentation

The document describes the development of a mobile app-based monitoring and control system for brooders. The system uses sensors to monitor temperature and humidity levels in the brooder and control them remotely via a mobile app. Specifically, it involves: 1) Designing and implementing a hardware kit that monitors temperature and humidity using a DHT11 sensor and controls them using a relay module. 2) Developing a mobile app in Dart that displays real-time data from the hardware kit and allows remote control. 3) Integrating the hardware and mobile app so that the kit can communicate sensor data to the app for monitoring brooding conditions remotely.

DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE APP

BASED MONITORING AND

CONTROL SMART BROODER

PRESENTATION BY: MARTIN GITAHI NDIANG’UI EN272-3980/2015

SUPERVISOR : PROF HINGA

INTRODUCTION

◉ A brooder is a place where

chicks are kept in the first 4
weeks.
◉ A brooder can be made of
cardboard and should be
preferably circular.

2
INTRODUCTION

◉ New born chicks are placed in a brooder so that they are

in a regulated environment.
◉ To ensure the chicks stay under minimum stress and
avoid any loss of chicks through deaths.
◉ Conducive temperature should be 30-33o C.
◉ Litter is sprayed with water 3 days before the chicks
arrive. This helps to maintain humidity, which should be
60-80%.

3
PROBLEM STATEMENT
◉ In present day, most farmers apply traditional
methods while monitoring these environmental
factors.
◉ They rely on human instincts to know the
humidity and temperature levels in the
brooding space.
◉ Sensors do not accompany the heat source
provided through traditional means.
4
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION

Device will improve the efficiency of monitoring

temperature and humidity levels within a brooding
structure hence reduced rate of mortality of chicks at
the young age.
The project is geared to words bringing the traditional
farm setting towards the more modern IoT world.
From research undertaken shows their are savings on
cost
5
MAIN OBJECTIVE

◉ To design and implement a device which

monitors temperature and humidity levels
in a brooder and controls them to a
required range and is integrated to a mobile
application.

6
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

i. To design and implement a temperature and humidity

monitoring and controlling kit.

ii. To develop a mobile application which displays numerical data

obtained from the hardware.

iii. To interface & integrate the hardware device and enable it

communicate with the mobile application.

3 LITERATURE REVIEW

◉ THE PROPOSED SYSTEM

◉ Through this project, the problems that come with
more traditional methods employed in brooding
space are solved through incorporating sensors to
aid in monitoring of the environmental factors.
◉ The sensors are able to report to the farmer in real
time.

HARDWARE COMPONENTS

◉ Node Microcontroller Unit (ESP-12E Module).

◉ DHT11 Temperature and Humidity Sensor.
◉ 5V Channel Relay Module.
◉ 5V DC Power Adapter.
◉ Infra-red lamp

12
SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE

◉ The android application was developed on Android Studio using Dart

programming with C-syntax. Dart has the ability to compile to either
machine code or JavaScript.
◉ Operation of the mobile app will begin once it’s opened and it is
granted access to an internet connection.
◉ It will then be active and in the real time data loop constantly listening
in on any changes from the server broker platform.
◉ Once the mobile app fetches data from the platform it is able to display
it onto the mobile dashboard.
