Millets are highly varied groups of small seeded grasses widely grown
around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food.
Eg : bajra , jowar , ragi etc.
History of millets :-
Millets are an ancient crop of the
mankind and hold a lot of
importance in the agriculture of India.
According to research , millets were consumed in the Indus Saraswati
civilization .
It was common in Asia even before rice .
It is thought to be the earliest dry crop cultivated in east Asia .
In India , before the green revolution , millets made up around 40%
of all cultivated grains .

To create domestic and global demand and to provide
nutritional food to the people, Government of India had
proposed to the United Nations for declaring 2023 as
International Year of Millets
The proposal of India was supported by 72 countries
and United Nation's General Assembly (UNGA)
declared 2023 as International Year of Millets on 5th
March, 2021.

Given its numerous benefits, millets are making a
steady comeback in the last few years, and then
there has been a growing awareness about them
among Indian consumers, restaurant chains, chefs
as well as policy makers who are promoting the
grains and introducing them to the mainstream.
MILLETS
One of the key reasons millets have a global acceptance, is
that it can help the world to face the challenge of feeding an
ever-growing global population.
Resilient seeds like millet provide an affordable and nutrient-
rich option.
This is why promoting their cultivation and consumption can
help empower smallholder farmers, achieve sustainable
development and transmute the agrifood systems.
