CASTELLATED BEAM
CASTELLATED BEAMS
A rolled metal beam the web of which zigzag cut, then
welded together so as to join the peaks of both halves, thus
increasing its depth.
TYPES OF CASTELLATED BEAMS
• Beams with hexagonal web opening are called castellated
& beams designed with CB
• Where as beams with round web openings are called
cellular beams & beams designed with LB
Advantages of Castellated beams
1. They are easy to assemble
2. They are light weight
3. Aesthetic appearance left exposed
4. Castellated beams are manufactured in different
shapes and pattern
5. Structural channels to increase the beams depth
without adding additional material & weight
Disadvantages of Castellated beams
1. The increased fabrication costs associated with the
cutting & welding of the section
2. Lateral Torsional Buckling of the web : This is
caused by large shear at the welded joints
3. Rupture of welded joints in the web : This arises due
to excessive horizontal shear at the welded joints in
the web
4. Lateral Torsional Buckling of the overall beam :
Castellated beam undergo lateral torsional buckling
of the whole span
WHERE CASTELLAED BEAMS ARE USED
Long span floor.
Roof systems.
Parking sheds
Tapered roof support beams
FINISH
For projects using a galvanized finish, we
recommend the use of cellular beam in order to
minimize stress risers in the galvanizing process
