Introduction
Stamping, also referred to as pressing, is a manufacturing
process that involves the deformation of flat sheet metal,
either in blank or coil form into a desired shape. This
process is widely utilized in numerous industries, including
the automobile, aerospace, and electronics sectors, to
produce a range of components, from simple brackets to
intricate assemblies.
z
Basic Concepts of Metal Stamping
Stamping involves clamping a sheet of metal at its edges and
applying pressure to deform it into a desired shape. The
process typically involves using die, which has a cavity, and a
shaped punch that applies force to the metal to deform it .
The metal sheet is placed over the die, and the punch is then
forced into the die cavity, causing the metal to deform and
take on the shape of the cavity.

Stamping technique
There are a variety of metal stamping techniques that
are utilized for particular applications There are three
major types of metal stamping:
progressive die stamping
Transfer die stamping
four-slide stamping.

Stamping presses
There are three common types of stamping presses:
1. Mechanical stamping presses
2. Hydraulic stamping presses
3. Mechanical servo stamping presses
The distinction between the three types comes from the power
source used to operate the press.
z
Mechanical stamping presses
Mechanical stamping presses have a
motor that is connected to the
mechanical flywheel, which stores
energy to help the machine operate.
These presses can produce a variety
of punch sizes, ranging from 5mm to
500mm, depending on the specific
press being used.
z
Hydraulic
stamping presses
Hydraulic stamping presses use
hydraulic fluid as the power source.
The hydraulic pistons release fluid that
has a proportional amount of force to
the piston head’s diameter, allowing
for a high level of control over how
much pressure is applied at any given
moment. Hydraulic presses range in
size from 20 tons to 10,000 tons, with
stroke sizes ranging from 10mm to
800mm.
z
Mechanical servo stamping presses
Mechanical servo stamping
presses do not use flywheels
as their power source. Instead,
they rely on high-capacity
motors to create intricate
designs at a faster pace than
standard hydraulic presses.
Servo presses are highly
programmable, making it easy
to have control over the
stroke, slide position, motion,
and speed of the press.
The specific type of stamping press used
depends on the complexity of the part being
produced and the production volume required.
and the choice of press will depend on the
specific needs of the production process

Defects in metal stamping
Metal stamping can result in defects that can compromise the
quality of the final product.
Some common defects in metal stamping include
cracks
insufficient hole spacing
Wrinkling

Advantages of metal stamping
One of the primary advantages of metal stamping is the lower
cost of dies, which are used to shape the metal.
In addition to lower die costs, metal stamping also offers lower
secondary costs compared to other processes.
These secondary costs can include plating, cleaning, and other
finishing processes that may be required to complete the part.
Metal stamping also benefits from a high level of automation,
making it an efficient and reliable option for manufacturers.
z
Disadvantage of metal stamping
the higher cost of presses. While the cost of dies is typically
lower in metal stamping, the cost of the presses themselves can
be a significant investment for manufacturers.
changing the dies mid-production can be challenging if
modifications to the design are required. This can add time and
cost to the production process, and may require additional
tooling or equipment to be purchased or manufactured
z
Conclusion
Metal stamping is a versatile and indispensable manufacturing
process that has significantly impacted various industries.
Stamping has the ability to produce complex and intricate parts
in a single operation has made this process a popular choice for
manufacturers, especially in high-volume production scenarios.
The combination of advanced technologies, such as computer-
aided design (CAD), has further streamlined the process,
allowing for improved accuracy and reduced cycle times.
