Theme and Rheme

Theme is an element that is considered as the starting point of

THEME the statement, namely what the speaker/author brings up as


the main topic in the sentence. Theme is usually manifested in
the initial position of the sentence or in the form of an
introductory clause.
Types of Theme

• Topical theme relates to the subject matter of the clause,


3 types of theme • Interpersonal theme relates to the speaker's attitude or
in SFL: stance towards the subject matter
• Textual theme relates to the way the message is
presented or organized
Theme and Rheme

Rheme is the part of the sentence that develops or explains the


Theme. Rheme can contain additional information about the
RHEME Theme or clarify the meaning expressed in the Theme. Rheme
is usually manifested in the final position of the sentence.
Examples
In each of the examples on the previous slide, the Theme is the information that is emphasized and
is considered the main topic of the sentence. While Rheme provides additional information or
explains the Theme in more detail.

sentence or discourse forms complex meanings. By understanding the
