Traffic Control System: (Group-19)

The document presents a proposed traffic control system that uses computer vision and machine learning algorithms. It aims to improve upon fixed-cycle traffic light systems by dynamically adjusting signal times based on real-time vehicle counts and types in each lane. The system would use cameras to detect vehicles and their numbers, then an algorithm would calculate optimal signal durations while prioritizing emergency vehicles. It is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times and fuel consumption, and minimize human intervention at intersections.

INTRODUCTION
Traffic Congestion –

• Traffic congestion is a condition in transport that is characterized by

slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queueing

• Sitting through traffic is among the least pleasant things we do

• India has world’s Top 10 most-choked roads, according to the latest

TomTom traffic index report
NEGATIVE
IMPACTS
• Wasting Time of passengers (Delays)

• Wasted fuel (Air Pollution)

• Wear and tear on vehicles

• Inefficient emergency management

• Traffic Accidents

• Stressed and frustrated motorists

REASONS BEHIND
TRAFFIC CONGESTION

• Narrow Roads
• Illegal Parking
• Increasing number of population
• Improper planning of city development
• Less focus on Public Transportation
• Inefficient Traffic Signal Management

TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM 7

INSPIRATION
• According to the TomTom Traffic Index, 4 of the top 10 countries facing the most traffic
congestion are in India.
• We as day scholars, face problem commuting
• We see often a policeman managing the movements instead of the traffic light.

To implement such a system, we need two main parts:

1. eyes to watch the real-time road condition and,
2. a brain to process it.

PROBLEM
STATEMENT
• Traffic congestion is a major problem in many cities
• Fixed-cycle light signal controllers are not resolving problem
• Disproportionate and diverse traffic in different lanes leads to inefficient utilization of
same time slot

Our Task is to:

• Move as many users through the intersection as possible
• Minimal conflict between these users
• Emergency Vehicle Management
TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM 9

METHODOLOGY
This project can be broken down into 3 modules:

1. Vehicle Detection Module –

• Detecting the number of vehicles
• Providing Types of Vehicles

2. Signal Switching Algorithm –

• Calculating time
• Setting time for different lanes
• Updating time based on emergency

3. Displaying Timer –
• Show time on signals
• Update timer

ALGORITHM
Factors we are considering:
1. Number of Lanes
2. Count of vehicles of each class
3. Traffic Density analysis
4. Average Speed and Rank of Vehicles
5. Maximum and Minimum Time of each lane to avoid deadlock

CONCLUSION
The goal of this work is to improve intelligent transport systems by developing a Self-
adaptive algorithm to control road traffic.

This Traffic Control System uses live images from the cameras at traffic junctions for
traffic density calculation using YOLO object detection and sets the signal timers
accordingly .

This new system facilitates the movement of cars in intersections, resulting in reducing
congestion, providing faster transit to people, and reducing fuel consumption.
