History of F1: by Daire Flock

F1 racing has evolved significantly since its inception in 1950 in terms of safety and technology. Early F1 cars in the 1950s were manually operated, single-seater vehicles with no seatbelts that often resulted in driver deaths or injuries. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, safety improvements like seat harnesses and fire-retardant suits were introduced, and wings and slick tires were added to improve handling. Major rule changes in the 1990s and 2000s further prioritized driver protection, such as the HANS device and hybrid engines. The latest regulations continue to enhance safety with additions like the protective halo around the cockpit.
