NATIONAL NATIVE POPULAR FLOWERS
OF PHILIPPINES
Hooded Orchid
There are more than 1,100 members of the family
Orchidae in the nation; 900 are unique to the
Philippines. One of the most beautiful is the hooded
orchid. The local name of the hooded orchid
(Dendrobium aphyllum), fairy sanggumay, came from
its resemblance to a miniature flying fairy with
translucent violet wings and a yellow body (lip) that
usually attaches to the cane-like stem. The flower is
often used in leis for graduation ceremonies or as
decorations or garlands.
Rose Grape
Despite commonly being known as the Philippine
Orchid this flower has no association with
the Orchidae family.
It is simply named this way because it is an epiphyte
that lives on trees. Growing up to 3m tall the flowers
on this plant bloom in clusters of pink, purple, and
red blossoms.
As you can probably gather from its name the small
round blossoms are shaped like a red grape. Most
Filipino people use the flower for ornamental
purposes. The berries on this plant are also edible.
Palawan Cherry Blossom
The Palawan cherry blossom is almost
identical to the famous cherry blossom found
in Japan. Having said that, they both come
from different families.
Trees that flower like cherry blossoms are
found in Palawan, right in the heart of the
provincial capital. With summer peaking, the
local cherry trees, known as “balayong”
(Cassia nodosa) which are found on main
highways, public parks and campuses, are in
full bloom, capturing the attention of tourists
and locals alike.
Sampaguita
The species Jasminum sambac is native to southern Asia,
in India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Sampaguita is serving
as the National Flower of for two countries – Philippines
and Indonesia.. The beautiful ornamental Sampaguita
blooms cover the glossy green leafed bushed type ever
bloomer. The Sampaguita is also well known in Asia for
its use in teas and religious offerings, symbolizing divine
hope.
Sampaguita grow on a woody vine or semi-climbing
shrub, which reaches a height of 1,2 meters. The leaves
are ovate or rounded in shape and 6 to 12 cm long. The
leaves and Sampaguita flowers grow on short stalks.
The Sampaguita flowers bloom either singly or as bundles
of blossoms at the top of the branches.
