Quality Control
Quality control is defined as planned and specified actions or
operations necessary to produce concrete that will meet
requirements. So as to avoid defects, delays, repair costs and
injuries, quality control focuses on batching, placing and finishing
of concrete works.
Quality control is the responsibility of the contractor. The
contractor is required to submit a Quality Control Plan that is
contract specific. It should state how the control of materials,
equipment and operations shall be maintained. A quality control
plan is to ensure that the quality control activities are carefully
planned, sufficient and consistent.
Quality Control Plan
A quality control plan should include:
● The quality control organization ( an organizational chart that should
include names and the report hierarchy, of the quality control manager,
inspector, samplers, testers and laboratories involved)
● Quality Control Inspection plans
● Quality control testing plans (lists of tests required by specification,
frequency of sampling and testing, sampling location and laboratory staff
responsibility)
● Corrective Action Plans
● Quality Control documents
Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is defined as those planned and systematic operations
conducted to ensure that the operation and/or product meet specifications.
“Quality Assurance” encompasses the engineer’s oversight of the contractor’s
quality control plan; verifying the results of quality control and the process
control testing; and inspecting for conformance to plans and specifications.
Quality assurance is the responsibility of the engineer.
Quality Control In Concrete Production
Concrete is a variable product and changes slightly everyday. It is important to
implement a quality control plan that minimizes this variability since changes
influences placing, compacting and curing of the concrete and indirectly the
hardening properties. Preliminary tests and conforming with specifications are
ways of reducing concrete’s variability.
Preliminary Testing of Concrete
This is the responsibility of the contractor and needs to be repeated after any
major changes in constituents and mix proportions.
For ready mix concrete, preliminary tests can be made by the mix producer. To
allow to corrective action, the concrete mix producer should communicate
changes to the contractor.
It is possible to reduce the deviation in the concrete’s strength by continuously
monitoring and making rapid adjustments to mixture proportions.
Quality Control In Construction
Quality control in construction involves compliance with minimum standards of
material and workmanship in order to ensure the performance of the structure
according to the design. For the purpose ensuring compliance, random samples
and statistical methods are commonly use as the basis for accepting or rejecting
work completed and batches of materials. Rejection of a batch is based on non-
conformance or violation of the relevant design specifications.
Prerequisites for successful control are careful planning of the total construction
process, detailed job preparations and corresponding logistics for materials and
services supplied from external sources. Some aspects of consistent control
system for concrete construction are:

● Transporting of concrete on site
● Placing, compacting and curing techniques
● Placing temperature of fresh concrete
