SCC Design and Material Calculation

The document provides details for designing and calculating materials for self-consolidating concrete (SCC). It includes the mix design, materials calculation, and procedure for compressive strength testing of concrete cubes. The target mix proportions are 1:2:2.71 cement: fine aggregate: coarse aggregate by volume. The calculations determine the materials needed for 6 concrete cubes as 7.8kg cement, 17.34kg fine aggregate, and 21kg coarse aggregate. The procedure for compressive strength testing involves casting the cubes and testing them after 7 and 28 days of curing.

REQUIRED DATA:-
1)Grade designation- M30
2)Type of cement and grade of cement- OPC 53 grade
3)Maximum nominal size of aggregate- 20mm
4)Exposure condition- Severe(IS-456, Table-5)
5)Minimum cement content - 320 kg/m3(IS-456, table-5)
6)Workblity in terms of slump-100mm(IS-456-Cl.7.1)
7)Transportation time - 30mins
8)Method of placing - Pumping
9)Standard deviation-5.0 N/m²(IS-10262:Table-2)
10)Type of course aggregate- Crushed angular aggregate
TARGET STRENGTH:-
f’ck = fck + 1.65 S or fck + X,whichever if
higher

Target mean compressive strength at 28

days
S - standard deviation
(IS-10262-2019, Table-2 P.No.3)
S - 5.0 N/mm²
(IS-10262-2019, Table-1 P.No.3)
X - Factor based on grade of concrete as
per table-1
X - 6.5 N/mm²

f’ck = 30 + 1.65 × 5 = 38.25 N/mm²

WATER CONTENT:-
IS-10262,Table-4, P.No.5
->20mm aggregate-186kg(for 50mm slump)
*For 100mm slump
->For every 25mm-add 3% (IS-10262-
Cl.5.3)
186+6% of 186=197 kg
->For superplasticizer reduce 20%
(197-(20% of 197)=157.6 kg

WATER CONTENT-157.6 KG
CALCULATION OF
CEMENT CONTENT:-
->Water Cement Ratio=
Water Content/Cement Content

->Cement Content=
Water Content/Water Cement Ratio
=157/0.4=394 kg/m³>320 KG/m³

CEMENT CONTENT-394 KG/M³

AGGREGATE
PROPORTION BETWEEN
C.A & F.A:-
IS-10262, Table-5, P.No-6,Cl.5.5.1
Zone-II-0.62(w/c-0.5)
Every 0.05 decrease , increase 0.01,
(w/c -0.45)(0.45-0.4=-0.05 )
0.62+0.01=0.63
For pumpable concrete C.A can be
reduced up to 10%(IS-10262, Cl.5.5.2)
->Vol of CA=0.63-(10% of 0.63)=0.549
->Vol of FA=1-0.549=0.451
SUMMARY
->Cement - 394 kg/m³
->Water - 157.6 kg/m³
->Fine Aggregate - 791 kg/m³
->Coarse Aggregate - 1068 kg/m³
(20 mm - 60% & 10 mm - 40%)
->Admixture - 4.334 kg/m³ (1.1% of cement)
->Water cement ratio - 0.4

MATERIAL CALCULATION
Volume of cube:-
=150mmx150mmx150mm=0.15mx0.15mmx0.15mm
=0.003375m³

Dry volume:-
= 1.54xwet volume =1.54x0.00375 m³
=005197m³

So for M30 grade of concrete calculation will be:-

Design ratio = 1:2:2.71 (Total=5.71)

1) Cement:-
= 0.005197/5.71 =0.000910157m³

In kg=0.000910157m³x1440kg
=1.31kg
2) Sand :-
= 0.000910157m³ x 2=0.00182076m³

In kg =0.00182076×1600
=2.89kg

3)Aggregate:-
=0.0.000910157m³×2.75
=0.0024855215m³

In kg=0.0024855215×1450 =3.6kg

So for 6 cubes materials used are =

- Cement=1.31×6=7.8kg
-Sand=2.89×6= 17.34kg
- Aggregate=3.6×6=21kg

4) Admixture:- = 1.1% of cement ( As per IS CODE)

=1.1%× 7.8kg =0.0858=85.8ml
PROCEDURE FOR STRENGTH TEST
->For most of the works cubical moulds of size 150mm x 150mm x 150mm are commonly used.

->This concrete is poured in the mould and appropriately tempered so as not to have any
voids.

->After 24 hours, moulds are removed, and test specimens are put in water for curing.

->The top surface of these specimen should be made even and smooth.

->This is done by placing cement paste and spreading smoothly on the whole area of the
specimen.

->These specimens are tested by compression testing machine after 7 days curing or 28
days curing.

->Load should be applied gradually at the rate of 140 kg/cm² per minute till the Specimens
fails.

->Load at the failure divided by area of specimen gives the compressive strength of
concrete.
