SHAVING PROCEDURE WITH

Definition:
This is the removal of bacteria from the operative site
and surrounding area before the operation or procedure.
It is done by shaving, mechanical washing and chemical
disinfection.

Purpose:
To render the site as free as possible from bacteria, so
that incision can be made through which a minimum danger
of infection.

General Considerations:
1. Shaving should be directed on the growth of hair.
2. Care should be observed in cleaning the umbilicus and the
genital region
3. Area to be shaved will depend on nature of operation.
4. Shave thoroughly on sufficient wide area, it is better to
shave too large on an area
than too small.
5. Report any signs of skin eruption. They serve potential site
of infection.
6. Use sharp razors.

PROCEDURE:
1. Screen Patient. Explain the procedure to the client.
RATIONALE:
To provide privacy. Helps to decrease the client’s
anxiety and increases the client’s cooperation.

2. Wash hands and apply the disposable gloves. Remove or
raise patient’s gown up as indicated. Drape adequately.
RATIONALE:
To provide privacy. Reduces the transmission of
microorganisms.

3. Place a waterproof pad under area being shaved. Assist the
client into a position required.
RATIONALE:
Positioning of the client and placement of waterproof
pad will decrease contamination of bed linen.
4. Lather area freely with soap or any detergent.
RATIONALE:
Facilitates removal of microorganism.

5. Using razor, remove the hair with one hand while stretching the
skin with the other. Hold the razor about 30-40 degrees angle to
skin. Use long, gentle strokes, pulling razor in the direction which
the hair grows. Remove repeatedly the excess hair from razor with
tissue paper. Inspect the skin under direct light to make certain it is
free of all hair. On area where hair is barely visible, inspect skin by
leaning forward so that eyes are on the level with the skin.

6. After hair is removed, clean with soap and or antiseptic
solution. Avoid vigorous rubbing.
RATIONALE:
Excessive friction may produce abrasion of the skin.
7. Rinse skin with warm water and dry.
RATIONALE:
To clean the perineum from solutions used.

8. Reposition or dress clients as appropriate.

Promotes client comfort.
