Craft Paper from Rice Straw Recycling

This document presents a study that aims to test different combinations of rice straw and recycled paper to create a craft paper. It seeks to address the problems of burning rice straw in farms and paper waste in schools. The study will experiment with combinations of 75% rice straw/25% paper, 50%/50%, and 25%/75% to determine which ratio produces the best craft paper qualities of durability, smoothness, flexibility and ink absorbency. Previous studies found rice straw and recycled paper can be used effectively for papermaking while providing economic and environmental benefits. The purpose of this study is to utilize discarded rice straw and recycled paper to reduce waste and help the environment.

Statement of the Problem
The main problem of this study is the negative effects of burning of rice straws in
farming sites in San Fernando, Masbate and paper waste in Andres Clemente Jr.
National High School. This study aims to test the effectiveness of rice straw and
recycled paper to make a craft paper. Specifically, this study will answer the
following questions:

1. Which percentage of combination of materials is best to make a fine craft paper?

2. Which is better in comparison to regular paper and craft paper made of rice
straws and recycled paper based on the following criteria:

A. Durability
B. Smoothness
C. Flexibility
D. Ink Absorbency
Conceptual Framework
Fibers are present in both rice straws and recycled
paper, which are essential components for the
experiment. The combination of the specified
materials is intended to create new and unique paper
that will be tested for durability, flexibility,
smoothness, and ink absorbency.
Summary of Literature
From the related literatures gathered, rice straw is an efficient and effective
material for paper making. The use of rice straw is an approach of using waste
as a raw material (D. Kaur et al., 2016), gains economic and environmental
benefits, and an alternative eco-safe materials and methods of production
(Shamin et al., 2016). The related studies relies that rice straws are reliable
when it comes to production of new paper.

On used paper, recycling paper reduces the volume of waste while helping to
boost the local economy through the collection and sorting of waste paper and
an alternative way of lessening the solid waste in the environment
(allcountyrecycling). And a huge considerable advantage of recycling paper is
that it uses less energy than making new paper products, eco-friendly, saves
energy and water (S. Swamy, 2022; M. Feria, 2022).
Both related studies and this study aims to make handmade paper using
alternative organic material in replacement to wood as the material for
papermaking. The only difference is that the previous studies used chemicals
(sodium hydroxide, etc.) for the process of papermaking, while the current study
will only be using water for the making of the paper.

The gap between the current and the previous study is the location of the study
and the ingredients utilized in the experiment. The current study filled the gap
by conducting a research about creating an alternative paper using used papers
and rice straws but instead of chemical agents, the researchers will use hot water
as an alternative. As for the location, the current study was carried out in Andres
Clemente Jr. National High School.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to make use of discarded rice
straws after harvesting to avoid soil deteriorating in some
farm sites and to reduce the paper waste in Andres Clemente
Jr. National High School. This study aims to create a craft
paper made from both said materials to help maintain the
waste filling up the environment of the school and the
ecosystem of the farming sites.
Research Design
The present proposed study will be an experimental type of research
that involves testing or attempting to prove a hypothesis by way of
experimentation or determining the efficacy or likelihood of
something previously untried (Resources.pollfish.com). This
experimental research is focused on the effectiveness of craft paper.
The researchers will test if it is possible to make craft paper from the
combination of the fibers of rice straw and recycled paper with no
other chemicals involved in the process of paper making. This study
will include determining what percentage of the organic materials'
quantity is best to make the desired craft papers using the specific
materials.
Data Collection
The gathering of data starts with the purchase of rice straws
available from the rice mills and used papers obtained from the few
classrooms the researchers visited with all due to the granted
permission of the owners. A minimum of 48 hours time-frame for
the soaking procedure of the paper; 2 hours boiling of rice straws
before grinding into small pieces; strained and shaped into a size of
paper and dried on the sun's heat. The experiment will have three
mixtures, which are the estimation of: (1) 750g of rice straw and
250g of used paper; (2) 500g and 500g of used paper; and (3) 250g
rice straw and 750g of used paper.
Delimitations
This researcher will not gather rice straw in other
municipalities such as San Jacinto, Batuan, and Monreal.
Same with the used paper, the researcher will not collect
recycled paper in other schools. The study is delimited to
examining alternative materials that can be used in
papermaking and will not include additional materials that
can be utilized in papermaking
Significance of the Study
The product of the proposed study is an offered solution for paper waste and
the soil deterioration caused by burning of rice straws.

This study can give awareness, knowledge and information to the

beneficiaries. This study might be beneficial to the following:

Farmers. This study will give information to the farmers on how to lessen
the negative effects of burning rice straws to the environment.

Students. This study will give an idea on how the students can make use of
the old paper that the students have.
Teachers. As the second parents of the students, teachers may
influence or educate the students about the negative effects of
paper waste and a better way of recycling paper.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources. This study

will give the government agency an idea about this product as
an alternative way of using rice straws instead of burning the
rice straws which causes environmental problems.
