Evidence Based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is defined as using the best available evidence from nursing and medical research to improve patient outcomes and make informed clinical decisions. It involves systematically searching for and critically appraising relevant research evidence and applying it to patient care while considering each patient's individual needs and preferences. Barriers to implementing EBP include lack of time, heavy workloads, insufficient skills and knowledge in appraising research, and lack of organizational support. Nurses can promote EBP by educating students and staff on EBP principles, seeking current evidence from journals and online sources, encouraging questioning of current practices, and empowering clinicians to make evidence-based changes.
