Water Absorption Test for Aggregates

This experiment tested the water absorption of coarse aggregate to understand its internal structure and porosity. Aggregates were immersed in water for 24 hours, surface dried, and weighed, then dried in an oven and weighed again. The percentage of water absorbed was calculated using this formula: % Absorption = (Surface Dried Weight - Oven Dried Weight) x 100% / Oven Dried Weight. Water absorption provides insight into an aggregate's suitability, with more porous aggregates generally considered unsuitable unless proven otherwise through strength and hardness tests.

WATER ABSORPTION

TEST OF
AGGREGATES

EXPERIMENT NO.2
IMPORTANCE
Objective:
Water absorption gives an idea on the
internal structure of aggregate. Aggregates
having more absorption are more porous in
nature and are generally considered
unsuitable, unless found to be acceptable
based on strength, impact and hardness
tests.
MATERIALS
1. Oven
2. Balance ( Digital)
3. Course Aggregate ( Gravel) --- 2kg
1. PREPARE 2 KG. OF COURSE
AGGREGATES
2. IMMERSED THE AGGREGATE IN
THE WATER FOR 24 hrs.
3. SURFACE DRYING OF
AGGREGATES
4. WEIGH SURFACE DRIED
SAMPLE (WA)
5. DRIED THE SURFACE DRIED
AGGEGATE IN THE OVEN @ 120˚C
for 6 hrs
6. WEIGH OVEN DRIED SAMPLE
( WB )
FORMULA OF % ABSORPTION

% ABSORPTION = ( WA – WB) * 100%/ (WB)

Where: WA = surface dried sample
WB = oven dried sample

* % Absorption for aggregates should not be

greater than 60%
