OJT2 - Steam Turbine Part & Components (Part 1)

The document provides an overview of the key components of a steam turbine, including the high pressure turbine, low pressure turbine, turbine bearings, and turning gear. It describes the functions of the high pressure and low pressure turbines in converting steam energy to rotational energy. It also explains the purpose and operation of the turning gear, which slowly rotates the turbine when shutdown to provide even heating and cooling of the rotor. The turning gear is engaged either manually using a lever or automatically using controls at the DCS.

Steam Turbine Part & Components (pt.1)

(SDOP #27)
1. High Pressure Turbine
2. Low Pressure Turbine
3. Turbine Bearing
4. Turning Gear
1.0 System Overview
 Sectional drawing of Fuji Steam Turbine
1.0 System Overview
 HP Steam Control Valves
1.0 System Overview
 Steam turbine consist 2 turbine sections, coupled
on a common shaft :
- one single flow HP turbine
- one single flow LP turbine
 HP shell has the control valves mounted in the
upper and lower half in integral casing called
steam chest.
 HP rotor supported by 2 bearings – one at each end
2.0 High Pressure Turbine
 HP turbine receive steam from high pressure
section of HRSG
 Convert the energy steam  Rotating steam
 The steam admission come through 3 Control Valve
which installed at top of HP turbine
 The steam enters at 83.4 barg, and temp 530degC
(full load)
 HP turbine is sealed at the end where it passes
through HP turbine shells:
- to prevent steam from leak out to turbine hall
- air ingress in to the turbine (to maintain
vacuum
3.0 Low Pressure Turbine
 LP turbine receive steam from Low pressure section
of HRSG
 Convert the energy steam  Rotating steam
 LP turbine is a singe flow type turbine. This mean
the steam approach a group of stages at one end,
flows axially through the radial-mounted blading
and exhaust at another end of group stages.
 LP turbine exhaust steam to Air Cooled Condenser,
through exhaust hood
 Condenser – always under vacuum condition during
operation (Condenser Pressure ~0.25barA)
 The steam enters at 83.4 barg, and temp 530degC
(full load)
4.0 Turning Gear
 Rotates turbine/generator slowly 3.7rpm when the
turbine shutdown.
 To provide evenly heating/cooling of the rotor
 If rotor stop when hot – will cause bowing and
excessive vibration of machine.
 Hot steam rise to the top casing – will cause
turbine casing distortion
4.0 Turning Gear
4.0 Turning Gear
 Driven by electric motor with a speed reducing
gear through a chain drive.
 Mounted on bearing no.2 cap – between turbine and
generator
 The turbine should be on turning gear for cooling
until turbine metal temp below 250degC.
 Lube oil system must be in service until turbine
metal temp fall to 200degC. To ensure adequate
colling.
 Turning gear can be engage manual & auto.
 Auto – “Remote” and “Group” at DCS, use oil
cylinder
 Local – hand lever
4.0 Turning Gear
 Turning gear has ammeter
 If any problem, such as rotor rubbing against
stationary components – turning gear motor will
abnormally high
 If there rubbing, the rotor eccentricity reading
would be high.

Turning Gear at ST Control DCS

4.0 Turning Gear - Operation
 To start Turning gear from DCS:
- Turning Gear key selector at “REMOTE”
- Bearing header pressure/temperature – normal
- Turbine speed – 0 rpm
 Click icon Turning Gear at DCS, the startup page
will appear. Press “ON” to start Turning Gear.
 To start Turning gear manually :
- Confirm Turbine speed is 0 rpm
- Selector key switch to “LOCAL” position
- For manual engagement of turning gear:
i. Pull out stopper (2 – refer image below)
[Link] the operating handle (9) until at its
engagement position
4.0 Turning Gear - Operation
iii. If turning gear does not engage properly, fit
the rachet handle to the shaft end of electric
motor, and turn it slightly until the turning gear
engage properly.
iv. Confirm the operating handle (9) shows correct
engagement of the turning gear, lever of the limit
switch (7) for engagement is moved to “ON” position
v. Switch “ON” the motor – press “Start” pushbutton
at Local junction box.

 When the turbine is on turning gear and admitting

steam is rolled, the turbine speed is more than
turning gear speed. Turning gear is automatically
disengaged. The turning gear motor is stop
automatically.
