MATH 9 - Addition & Subtraction of Radicals

This document provides information about adding and subtracting radicals: - Like radicals have the same radicand and can be added or subtracted; unlike radicals cannot be combined - Examples show combining like radicals by adding or subtracting the coefficients and keeping the same radical term - An example problem asks the reader to calculate the length of cable needed to help align a broken bone based on the setup shown, with the answer being 9 meters

GOOD

MORNING!
!!
TREASURE HUNT
TIME!!!
Group the following radicals and
place them inside each box.
Like radicals
Square-root expressions with the same
radicand are examples of like radicals.
ADDITON and SUBTRACTION of RADICALS
 Simplify all radicals
 Add or subtract like radicals. Like radicals
have the same radicands and indices.

ADDITON and SUBTRACTION of
RADICALS
Illustrative Examples:
a. - 5 = (3-5) √2
= -2

- + = (2 – 1 + 3) √𝑎
=
c. - 2 + + 5 = (6+1) + (-2+5)
= 7+3
d. + - =√(4)(2) + √(9)(2) -
= 2 √2 + 3 √2 - √2
= (2 + 3 - 4)
= = √2
To help align Adon’s broken bone, a doctor uses traction as
shown in the figure. A traction is applied by fixing a
weight, two pulleys and some stainless steel cable to a
broken leg. Based on the setup shown, how many meters
cable are used?
The total number of meters of cable can
be found by adding + + + .
+ + + =3+
¿ 3 √(4)(2)+√ ¿ ¿
= (3)(2) +3
=6+3
= 9 meters

9 meters of cable are needed to help

align Adon’s broken bone.
APPLICATION:
1.Mark has five paper clips of different sizes:
cm, cm, cm, 2 cm, and cm. If the paper clips are
connected, how long will it be?
cm + cm + cm + 2 cm + cm
cm + cm + cm + 2 cm + cm

( cm + cm + cm + 2 cm + cm

cm = cm

Assessment:
I. State whether the radicals are like or unlike.
1. and 5 2. and

II. Solve the given expressions:

1. 9 + 2 - 6 = 2. 9 - 2 + 3 =
Assignment:
Find the sum and difference of the following radical
expression by matching column B with column A.
“Life is just a simple math of addition
& subtraction but we make it
complicated problem by adding too
many formulas and never get any
solution let it be easy in its own way.”
