GROUP ACTIVITY: Unlock Me!
The students will be grouped into four groups and they
will be given a tag board and a chalk for them to write
their answers. The statements will be flashed on
screen and they will be given 30 seconds to unlock the
words for each item. When time is up, all tag boards up
and two points will be given for every correct answer.
Direction: Rearrange the jumbled letters to get the
correct answer.

GROUP ACTIVITY: Sub Me In!
The class will be grouped into four groups. Each group
will be given a tag board and chalk for them to write
their answers. The task will be flashed on the screen
and they will be given 45 seconds to solve for each
item and the group who can raise first the correct
answer will be declared the winner. Five points will be
given for every correct answer.
Suppose numbers are assigned to letters of the
alphabet as follows:
A= 1 F= 6 K= 11 P= 16 U= 21 Z= 26
B= 2 G= 7 L= 12 Q= 17 V= 22
C= 3 H= 8 M= 13 R= 18 W= 23
D= 4 I= 9 N= 14 S= 19 X= 24
E= 5 J= 10 O= 15 T= 20 Y= 25
A= 1 F= 6 K= 11 P= 16 U= 21 Z= 26
B= 2 G= 7 L= 12 Q= 17 V= 22
C= 3 H= 8 M= 13 R= 18 W= 23
D= 4 I= 9 N= 14 S= 19 X= 24
E= 5 J= 10 O= 15 T= 20 Y= 25
Using this, find the equivalent value of the following words by
substituting the numerical value above to each letter of the word
and adding all the numerical digits.
Example: FACE = 6 + 1 + 3 + 5 = 15
1. HOPE
HOPE = 8 + 15 + 16 + 5 = 44
2. COURAGE
COURAGE = 3 + 15 + 21 +18
+ 1 + 7 + 5 = 70
3. HARDWORK
HARDWORK= 8 + 1 + 18 +
4 + 23 + 15 + 18 + 11= 98
4. DREAM
DREAM= 4 + 18 + 5 + 1 + 13
= 41
5. SUCCESS
SUCCESS = 19 + 21 + 3 + 3
+ 5 + 19 + 19 = 89
ANALYSIS:
1. How did you feel in our previous activity?
2. What did we do to find the value of the
given words?
3. Have you experienced any difficulty in
determining the equivalent value?
4. What procedures did you used to derive
the answer?
EVALUATING
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS
DISCUSSION:
An algebraic expression is a mathematical
sentence that is made up of a constant and
a variable along with the algebraic
operations (addition, subtraction, etc.) and
does not contain an equal sign.
An example of an algebraic expression is
2𝑥+3𝑦.
When a number is substituted for the
variable in an algebraic expression, the
algebraic expression takes a numerical
value. Finding the value is called evaluating
algebraic expressions.
There are at least two steps involved in
evaluating an algebraic expression:
1. Substituting the variable by the given
number; and
2. Performing the indicated arithmetic,
following the order of operations (GEMDAS)
rule by:
a. simplifying expressions within grouping
symbols
b. simplifying powers or exponents
c. simplifying products and quotients in
order from left to right
d. simplifying sums and differences in order
from left to right
Some algebraic expression contains two or
more variables, you need a value for each
variable to get the numerical value of the
algebraic expression. Without the value of
the variable, we cannot evaluate an
algebraic expression.
Here are some examples of evaluating an
algebraic expression.
Example 1: Evaluate the algebraic expression
5𝑥−2 when 𝑥=4.
Solution: Substitute 4 for 𝑥. Then evaluate the
resulting expression following the GEMDAS rule.
5𝑥−2 =5(4)−2
=20−2
=18
Example 2: Evaluate the algebraic expression
9when:
a. 𝑥=0 b. 𝑥=2 c. 𝑥=−4 d. 𝑥=−1/3
Solution:
a. Substitute 0 for 𝑥. Then evaluate the resulting
expression following the GEMDAS rule.
9+2 =9+2
=9(0)+2
=0+2
=2
b. Substitute 2 for x.
9+2 =9+2
= 9(4)+2
=36+2
=38
c. Substitute −4 for x. d. Substitute - for x.
9+2 =9+2 9+2 =9 (- + 2
= 9(16)+2 = 9 () +2
=144+2 =1+2
=146 =3
Example 3: Solve the value of the expression
2+4𝑥𝑦−10 when 𝑦=3 and 𝑥=2
Solution: Substitute 3 for 𝑦 and 2 for 𝑥. Then
evaluate the resulting expression following the
GEMDAS rule.
2+4𝑥𝑦−10 = 2+4(2)(3)−10
= 2(4)+24−10
= 8+24−10
= 32−10
= 22
Example 4: Evaluate when;
a. 𝑥=1 and 𝑦=−1 b. 𝑥=2 and 𝑦=3
Solution:
a. Substitute 1 for x and −1 for y.
=
= = = -1
Solution:
b. Substitute 2 for x and 3 for y.
= =

ASSIGNMENT
Ⅰ. Directions: Analyze the problem and solve what is asked.
A. The following mathematical statements describe
cost and revenue in pesos from the production and
sale of 𝑦 units of teddy bears.
Cost (𝐴) of manufacturing: 𝐴=45𝑦 + 90
Cost (𝐵) of marketing: 𝐵=3−5𝑦+25
Revenue (𝑅) from sales: 𝑅=10+20
1. What is the cost of manufacturing 50 units of teddy
bears?
2. What is the cost of marketing 50 units of teddy
bears?
3. What is the total cost of manufacturing and marketing
50 units of teddy bears?
4. What is the revenue from selling 50 units of teddy
bears?
5. If we assume that the profit is revenue minus total
cost, what is the profit from selling 50 units of teddy
bears?
Ⅱ. Create one problem that involves evaluating
algebraic expressions.
Example: Lesley sells roses and sunflowers. The
algebraic expression 150𝑟+125𝑠 gives the cost in
pesos of 𝑟 roses and 𝑠 sunflowers. What is the cost of
8 roses and 10 sunflowers?
Solution: Substitute 8 for 𝑟 and 10 for 𝑠 in the
expression 150𝑟+125𝑠
150𝑟+125𝑠 =150(8)+125(10)
=1200+1250
=2 450
CONCLUDING ACTIVITY:
The teacher will ask a volunteer from the
class to share his/her take away about the
steps in evaluating algebraic expressions
and how he/she can relate it to daily life
experiences.
“To get through the
hardest journey we need to
take only one step at a
time, but we must keep on
stepping.”
