Jesus: The Only Door to Salvation

1) Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. In contrast, hired hands will abandon the sheep when danger comes. 2) Jesus asserts that he is the only door/gate for salvation. All other religious leaders are described as thieves and robbers. 3) Salvation is available not just for Jews but for all people, as Jesus has other sheep from other lands that he desires to bring into the one flock under his care. 4) The Pharisees were divided in their views of Jesus, with some believing he was demon-possessed while others cited his miracles as evidence he was sent from God.

JOHN 10

JESUS IS THE GOOD

SHEPHERD
4 IMPORTANT
TRUTH IN JOHN 10
JESUS IS THE ONLY
DOOR OF THE SHEEP
1 TRUTH
ST
JOHN 10:1-6
“Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate,
but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the
gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the
sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When
he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him
because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will
run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this
figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
SHEEP PEN DURING THE TIME OF JESUS

At Night, Sheep were gathered into the sheep pen to protect them from thieves, weather and
wild animal. The sheep pen were caves, shed or open area surrounded by walls made of stone
or branches. Shepherd often sleep across the doorway of the pen to protect the sheep.
Ezekiel 34:2-3 - ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who
only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3 You eat the curds,
clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the
flock.
Ezekiel 34: 23 - 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge
between one sheep and another. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he
will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the LORD will be their God, and my
servant David will be prince among them. I the LORD have spoken.
JOHN 10:7

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily,

verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the

sheep.
JESUS AS THE EXCLUSIVE WAY TO
SALVATION
In the Sheep Pen, the shepherd function as the
gate, ketting the sheep in and protecting them.
Jesus is the gate to God’s salvation for us. He is
the one who will offer access to safety and
security to eternal life. Christ is our protector.
Some people resent that Jesus is the gate, the only
access to God. In this passage, we find that the
only way of salvation is through Jesus alone.
WHY DO CHRISTIAN SUFFER PERSECUTION
THESE DAYS
Unbelievers are okay with it if you say, “Jesus is a door to God.” They think, “That’s fine!
Mohammad is also a door and Buddha is a door and nature is a door. All religions lead to
God. There are many doors.” But when you draw the line that Jesus drew and insist, “No, He
is the only door,” you get accused of being prejudiced and intolerant of their feelings.
They are missing the fact that all people, whether Buddhists “of good will” or “good”
Catholics or “good” Baptists are all sinners by nature and can only be saved through faith in
the death of Christ to atone for their sins. As Peter put it to the “good” Jews of his day (Acts
4:12), “There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has
been given among men by which we must be saved.” Since Jesus is the only door …
ALL OTHERS CLAIMING TO
BE THE DOOR ARE THIEVES
AND ROBBERS

2 ND
TRUTH
JOHN 10:8-10
8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear
them.
9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and
out, and find pasture.
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come
that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
PROMISE OF ABUNDANCE IN LIFE IN JESUS

Obviously, Jesus was not saying that godly men like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and other
prophets were thieves and robbers. In the context, He is referring to those who preyed on
the sheep and used them for their own selfish ends. And, He was especially speaking of
the thieves and robbers who were standing before Him, the Pharisees who were not
godly shepherds over Israel.
In contrast to the thief who takes life, Jesus gives life. The life he gives right now is
abundantly richer and fuller. It is eternal. Life in Christ is lived on a higher plane
because of the overflowing forgiveness, love and guidance.
CHRIST WILLINGLY OFFER HIS LIFE
TO SAVE US FROM SIN.

TRUTH
JOHN 10:11-13
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his
11

life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does
not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he
abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the
flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a
hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
JESUS COMPARED TO OTHER RELIGIOUS
TEACHER

A hired hand tends the sheep for money,

while the shepherd does it for love. The
Shepherd owns the sheep and is committed
to them. Jesus does not merely doing the
job; he is committed to love us and even lay
his life for us. False teacher and false
prophet do not have commitment.
SALVATION IS NOT EXCLUSIVE TO
JEWS BUT IS MADE AVAILABLE TO
ALL WHO BELIEVE IN THE LORD
JESUS

4 TH
TRUTH
JOHN 10:14-16
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15

just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life

for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must

bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock

and one shepherd.

JESUS ARE CALLING NON-JEW TO BECOME HIS
SHEEP

The other sheep were non-jews. Jesus came

to save the gentiles as well. This is an
insight into his world wide mission – to die
for the sins of the world. People tend to
restrict God’s blessing to their own group,
but Jesus refuses to be limited by the fences
we build.
JOHN 10:17-18
17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it

up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I

have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This

command I received from my Father.”

JESUS IS GIVING IS LIFE TO BE A SACRIFICE FOR
OUR SINS

Jesus death and resurrection, as part

of God’s plan for the salvation of the
world were under God’s control. No
one could kill Jesus without his
consent
JOHN 10:19-21
19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided. 20 Many of them

said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a

demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

PEOPLE DIVIDED TO WHAT JESUS CLAIM

Like in this time, people are getting harassed for

proclaiming that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
Just life in this situation where Jesus claim and yet
people are divided and not convince on who Jesus is.
If Jesus is merely a man, his claim to be God would be
insane but the fact still remains that Jesus healed the
man born blind. The miracles will prove to us that his
claims as the Son of God is true.
