What is the Conjunctivitis?
• Conjunctivitis:
• Also known as pink eye, is inflammation of the outermost layer of the white part of the eye and the inner
surface of the eyelid. It makes the eye appear pink or reddish.

Period of infectivity.

Symptoms:
Redness of the conjunctiva (white part of the eye)
Swelling of the conjunctiva or eye lids may also occur.
The affected eye may have increased tears or be "stuck shut" in the morning.
Crusting of the eyelids or lashes, specially in the morning.
Itching, irritation, burning, pain is more common in cases due to allergies.
Increased tear production.
Feeling like any particle in the eye.
Discharge (pus or mucus) from eyes.
How long the viral conjunctivitis is contagious:
Viral conjunctivitis is contagious for usually 3 to 5 days, can be 2 up to weeks.
Causes of Conjunctivitis
• Most common cause is virus (adenovirus, herpes virus)
• Bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae, pneumococcus, and Neisseria meningitidis.
• Allergic: Pollen, animal hair, Irritants
• Chemical
• Associated with Other disease
Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention
• Diagnosis: Through Clinical findings
• Treatment: Supportive, eye drops or ointments.
• Prevention:
• The most effective prevention is good hygiene, especially avoiding rubbing the eyes with infected hands.
• Vaccination against adenovirus, Haemophilus influenzae, pneumococcus, and Neisseria meningitidis is also
effective.
• Povidone iodine eye solution has been found to prevent neonatal conjunctivitis.
• Outcome of the Disease: Improves within 5 to 14 days
How to Prevent Spreading

Actions to be taken:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for about 20 seconds when you are affected.
• Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. This can worsen the condition or spread to other eye.
• Wash any discharge around your eyes with clean hands.
• Avoid mass gatherings.
• Seek medical attention is case you are affected.
