Why are reading
strategies
important?
Reading strategies as a
mental process helps the
reader efficiently
comprehend text. In other
words, they're the tools
readers use to understand
what's written on a page.
These strategies can be
taught directly to students
and are critical for literacy
development.
WHAT IS SCANNING?

Scanning
• A reading strategy that
involves reading rapidly
in order to find specific
information, or facts.
• When you’re scanning,
you’re not supposed to
read every word.
Scanning is reading
quickly. Like Skimming.

Like Skimming, Scanning too, uses
keywords. But unlike Skimming, in which
you only use for getting the main idea,
Scanning is scanning quickly to locate
specific information or facts.

Facts may be buried within long test


passages that have relatively little else to
do with your topic or claim. Skim this
material first to see if it has the contents
that you need. By that, I mean you look for
keywords and try to get the main idea, to
know if it involves what you are looking
for.
SCANNING FOR
RESEARCH AND STUDY
After Skimming and understanding and
getting the idea, that it has what you are
looking for, go ahead and scan:

1. Know what you’re looking for. It is


meant as, you should decide keywords
or phrases related to the main idea.
Search terms if you will.

2. Look for only one keyword at a time.


If you are doing multiple keywords
you have to do multiple scans. It
depends if you are able to do so.

looking for, go ahead and scan:
