CHARLES LAW

JACQUES CHARLES(1746-1823)
• Jacques Charles(1746-1823) was the proponent of Charle’s
law(1764-1823). Charles was a French-born balloonist who flew
the first hydrogen balloon in 1783.
HOW DID JACQUES CHARLES DISCOVER CHARLES LAW?
• Charles did an expirement where he filled five different balloons
with the same volume of five different gases. He observed that the
balloons expanded uniformly when heated uniformly. This
observation was not published until 1802, by Gay-Lussac, but was
named for the original observer, Charles.
WHAT IS CHARLES LAW?
Charles’ Law, also sometimes referred to as the law of
volumes, gives a detailed account of how gas expands
when the temperature is increased. Conversely, when
there is a decrease in temperature it will lead to a decrease
in volume. Charles’s law, a statement that the volume
occupied by a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional
to its absolute temperature, if the pressure remains
constant. This empirical relation was first suggested by
the French physicist J.-A.-C. Charles about 1787.

should remember that the
temperatures are absolute

temperatures that are measured in
Kelvin, not in ⁰F or ⁰C.

1. A 3.5L flexible container holds a gas at 250K. What will the new volume be
if the temperature is increased to 400K?
V1 = 3.5L V2 = ?
T1 = 250K T2 = 400K
Use the given formula: Use crisscross multiplication: Divide both sides by 250:
𝑉 1 𝑉 2 3.5 𝐿 𝑉 2 1400 250𝑉 2
= = =
𝑇 1 𝑇 2 250𝑘 400𝑘 250 250
𝑉2=5.6 𝐿
As you can see as we increase the
temperature by 250 kelvin to 400
kelvin the volume increase by 3.5 L
to 5.6L.
2. A 275mL ballon is filled with air at 25⁰C. If the temperature is increased to 50C,
what is the new volume of the balloon? T1 = 25⁰C + 273 = 298K
T2 = 50⁰C + 273 = 323K
V1 = 257L V2 =?
275mL ? T1 = 25⁰C = 29 T2 = 50⁰C = 323K

to convert Celsius(C) to
Kelvin(K) before

V2 = 298 mL
3. The volume of a 500 mL container is decreased to 0.24L. What is the new
temperature in Celsius if the original temperature is 80C?
V1 =
V1 = 500 mL = 0.5L V2 = 0.24L
T1= 80⁰C + 273 = 353K
T1= 80⁰C = 353K T2 = ?
𝑉1 𝑉2 84.72 0.5 𝑇 2
= . = T2 = 169.4K
𝑇1 𝑇2 0.5 0.5
* Our goal is to find the Celsius 169.4 – 273 = -103.56⁰C
so we convert Kelvin(K) to
Celsius(C, to do that subtract it T2 = -103.56⁰C
by 273.
