What is Intersectionality
ምንድን ነው ?
“Intersectionality is a lens through which you
can see where power comes and collides,
where it interlocks and intersects”
• Although not a new concept, twenty-
eight years ago, Kimberlé Crenshaw
coined the term “intersectionality” as
a way to help explain the oppression
of African-American women.
• Today ,the framework is at the
forefront of global conversations for
justice.

Legitimized Identities?
• In the African context -within national boundaries ,ones
ethnicity more than race -as a social construct, plays a huge
factor in terms of where one is placed in social hierarchies.
For example , in Ethiopia ,dominant religious and ethnic
identities give one socio-economic status.
• African women’s experience of oppression is informed by
their geography, history, and culture
Outcomes of and politically and socially
constructed identities :-
• Privilege: An unearned resource or state of being that is only readily available to some
people because of their social status, such as being male, white, certain nationalities or
wealthy. Privilege confers benefits with respect to access to resources, social rewards, and
the power to shape the norms and values of society.
• Othering -The process by which social exclusion occurs, where a dominant group claims
normative status, and everyone outside of that group is defined in relation to the dominant
group. “Othering” is also described as what happens when a person, group or category is
treated as an object by another group.
• Marginalized groups often gain a status of being an "other ."Others" are virtually anyone
that differs from the societal norm of an average white male.
Why intersectionality ?
• Self-valuation and self-definition are two ways of resisting oppression. Practicing
self-awareness helps to preserve the self-esteem of the group that is being oppressed and allow
them to avoid any dehumanizing outside influences.
• It gives activist for justice the right frame to do a more informed meaningful social organizing
and feminist movement building . concerted effort by people and organizations to effect
change organize , forge coalitions, alliances and networks
• It is intention oriented /intentionality- in essence, applying intersectionality helps with clarity
and determination of purpose.
• intersectional movement address, wellness (self-care) a problem most social justice workers
need to prioritize and assert ,because of the endless backlash, harassment ,burnout and death.
Conclusion
Intersectionality encompasses a range of theories and
political agendas that aim to eliminate all forms of
discrimination against women and minoritized persons due to
sex and gender as well as class, race, ethnicity, ability,
educational background, type of work, location, nationality,
or other forms of social exclusion. It is the future for peaceful
coexistence.
