Understanding Polygons and Their Types

Polygons are closed, plane figures formed by three or more straight line segments connected end to end. Polygons are classified based on the number of their sides, with common polygons including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and more. A polygon is convex if any segment connecting two interior points lies entirely within the figure, and concave if any interior angle exceeds 180 degrees.

POLYGONS

Polygon are closed figures made up of three

or more line segments joined at their
endpoints.

Polygon is a union of non-collinear

segments, the sides on a plane that meet at
their endpoints.
Polygons are classified according to the number of sides.
Common names for polygons are listed in the table below.

Number of Name of Polygon
Sides
3 Triangle
4 Quadrilateral
5 Pentagon
6 Hexagon
7 Heptagon
8 Octagon
9 Nonagon
10 Decagon
11 Undecagon
12 Dodecagon
n n-gon
A polygon is convex if all segments joining any two
points of the polygon lie completely inside the polygon.

If the any interior angle of a polygon have more than

180° then it’s called concave.
DIRECTIONS: Find as many different polygon shapes
as you can see in the pattern. List down all of them.
A. Determine if the given shapes are POLYGON or NOT. If
polygons, name the classification according to sides.

B. Illustrate the following.

9. a quadrilateral
10. a decagon
