Evaluating Piecewise Functions Guide

The document discusses evaluating functions by replacing the variable with a value from the domain and computing the result. It provides examples of piecewise functions and evaluating various functions at given values of x. Students are provided practice exercises to evaluate functions at values and determine where functions cannot be evaluated.

PIECE WISE
FUNCTION
A piecewise function is
a function that is
defined by two or more
equations where each
equations applies to a
certain interval over a
specified domain.
Given the piecewise – define
function.

EVALUATING
FUNCTIONS
Evaluating a functions means replacing the
variable in the function, in this case x, with a
value from the function’s domain and
computing for the result. To denote that we
are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain
of f, we write f(a).
Evaluate the following functions

𝑎𝑡 𝑥 =𝟏 .𝟓 𝑎𝑡 𝑥 =𝟐

1.𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=2𝑥+1 2.𝑞 ( 𝑥 )=𝑥 −2𝑥+2 2

Evaluate the following functions

𝑎𝑡 𝑥 =3 𝑎𝑡 𝑥 =𝟐

2𝑥+1
3.𝑔 ( 𝑥)=√ 𝑥+1 4.𝑟 ( 𝑥 )=
𝑥−1
Evaluate the following functions

5.𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=2𝑥+1
Evaluate the following functions

2
6.𝑞 ( 𝑥 ) =𝑥 −2 𝑥+2
Find where g and r as define below.

𝑔 ( 𝑥 )=√ 𝑥+1 𝑟 (𝑥 )=
2 𝑥+1
𝑥 −1
SOLUTION

This is not possible because – 4 is not in
